Lula Discharged After Recovering From Brain Hemorrhage: “I’m Alive, Well and Eager to Work
Lula Back Home After Successful Brain Surgery, Vows to Return to Work
São Paulo, Brazil – Brazilian President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, 79, has returned home to São Paulo after recovering from a brain hemorrhage. The president was rushed to the hospital last Tuesday and discharged earlier than expected on Sunday, appearing before the press in good spirits.
“I’m alive, well, and eager to work,” Lula said with a smile, sporting a hat over his head. “I have a lot of work to do.”
Lula will remain at his São Paulo residence until at least Thursday, when he will undergo a follow-up CT scan to determine if he can resume his work schedule in Brasília. Doctors have recommended 15 days of relative rest and at least two months without physical activity.
While disappointed about having to temporarily halt his daily weight training and treadmill sessions, Lula assured reporters he would follow his doctor’s orders.”I’m very disciplined,” he said, adding, “I never think I’m going to die, but I’m afraid, so I have to take care of myself, and I know how to do that very well.”
His wife, First Lady Janja da Silva, has been by his side throughout his hospitalization.
Lula’s health scare began last Monday with intense headaches. Given his previous head injury from a fall in October, he sought immediate medical attention in Brasília.Doctors diagnosed him with a frontoparietal hematoma, a collection of blood between the brain and a membrane covering it.
He was swiftly airlifted to the Sirio Libanês hospital in São Paulo, where he underwent a two-hour surgery. The procedure was deemed successful, with no damage to brain tissue and no anticipated physical or neurological consequences.
After spending several days in the Intensive Care Unit, Lula underwent a second, less invasive procedure on Thursday to prevent future hemorrhages. His recovery was rapid, and by Friday, he was posting videos of himself walking briskly through the hospital corridors.
While Lula focused on his recovery, political turmoil continued outside the hospital walls. On Saturday, federal police arrested Walter Braga Netto, a former minister under Jair Bolsonaro and a retired army general, accused of leading a plot to overturn the 2022 election results.
When asked about the arrest, Lula defended Braga Netto’s presumption of innocence but stressed the need for severe punishment if his involvement in the alleged coup attempt is confirmed.
“We cannot accept disrespect for democracy, the Constitution, and the fact that in a generous country like Brazil, high-ranking military personnel would plot the assassination of the president, the vice president, and the Supreme Court justice,” Lula stated.
Approaching 80, Lula generally enjoys good health and takes pride in his fitness routine. Along with the recent brain surgery, he has undergone two other procedures since 2022: the removal of a throat nodule and the implantation of a hip prosthesis.
With elections scheduled for 2026,all signs point to Lula seeking re-election. A recent Quaest poll suggests he would win against all potential challengers, including Bolsonaro, who is currently barred from running due to an electoral court ruling.
Even while Lula was still in the ICU, Jilmar Tatto, the communications secretary of the Workers’ Party (PT), dismissed any speculation about a successor. “Lula is our plan A, B, C, D, E, F, G, and H,” Tatto declared. “He is our candidate in 2026, and no one in the PT is debating that.”
Please provide me with some context or a question! I need something to work with. For example, you could:
Ask me a question: “What is the capital of France?”
Give me a task: “write a short story about a talking cat.”
* Start a conversation: “What do you think about artificial intelligence?”
I’m excited to see what we can create together! 😊
