Lung cancer rates among women have risen globally over the past forty years, driven by a combination of genetic vulnerabilities, hormonal factors, and secondhand smoke exposure, according to medical specialists. While tobacco use remains the primary risk factor for the disease, experts emphasize that the rising incidence among women cannot be explained by smoking habits alone.
Rising Rates and Genetic Factors in Women
Data tracking the last forty years shows a 73 percent increase in lung cancer diagnoses among women, according to Medikal Onkoloji Uzmanı Prof. Dr. Yeşim Yıldırım. Speaking on the shift in patient demographics, Prof. Dr. Yıldırım noted that research points to deficiencies in DNA repair genes, specific genetic mutations, and female hormones like estrogen as contributing factors to this increased susceptibility.

Risk Factors Beyond Active Smoking

Although tobacco consumption accounts for roughly 71 percent of global lung cancer deaths and about 90 percent of cases in Turkey according to Uzm. Dr. Çetinkaya, passive smoke exposure plays a prominent role for non-smoking women. Prof. Dr. Yıldırım stated that studies demonstrate rising lung cancer rates even in women who do not smoke, noting that women frequently face higher levels of secondhand smoke exposure in domestic settings compared to men. Other recognized environmental factors include radon gas, asbestos, and general environmental toxins.
Modern Treatment Advances and Early Screening

Survival rates and treatment outcomes for advanced lung cancer have improved over the past decade due to personalized medical approaches. Prof. Dr. Yıldırım explained that the integration of targeted therapies, smart medications, and immunotherapy has multiplied patient survival rates two to three times while extending disease-free periods and improving quality of life. Pathological examinations of tumor molecular structures now allow clinicians to tailor combinations of immunotherapy, targeted drugs, or chemotherapy to individual patients.
Early diagnosis remains a critical factor in patient outcomes, as lung cancer frequently develops without clear symptoms until advanced stages. Uzm. Dr. Çetinkaya stated that patients diagnosed in the early stages experience an average survival rate of about 70 percent. Persistent symptoms such as a changing cough, sputum production, bloody sputum, chest or back pain, and increasing shortness of breath warrant immediate medical evaluation, while individuals in high-risk categories are encouraged to participate in organized cancer screening programs.
