A New Era for European Night Buses
European travelers will soon have a new, comfortable, and sustainable option for long-distance journeys. Swiss transport company Twiliner is launching a network of premium night buses this November, promising to redefine overnight travel across the continent. The service aims to bridge the gap between the convenience of bus travel and the comfort typically associated with trains or flights.
twiliner isn’t simply offering another night bus; it’s introducing a new standard of comfort. Each of the 21 seats - 18 on the upper deck and 3 on the lower – fully reclines into a lie-flat bed at the touch of a button. Designed with inspiration from business class airline seating, each seat includes pillows, covers, electrical outlets, individual tables, reading lamps, and complimentary internet access. A small storage compartment provides convenient access to personal belongings.
The lower deck features a spacious bathroom and locker room (showers are not currently available), as well as a snack bar offering light refreshments. passengers are permitted one standard-sized suitcase (up to 23kg/80x50x35cm) and a smaller carry-on bag (up to 5kg/50x30x20cm). Bicycles, skis, and surfboards can be accommodated with advance reservation.
sustainable Travel Without Compromise
Beyond comfort, Twiliner prioritizes environmental duty. The company claims its coaches are as sustainable as train travel, reducing CO2 emissions by 85% compared to air travel. This commitment is further demonstrated by the use of HVO (Hydrotreated Vegetable Oil) diesel, a renewable fuel derived from waste fats and vegetable oils.
Initial Routes and Expansion Plans
The initial network, launching in November 2025, will connect Zurich with Amsterdam (with stops in Basel, Luxembourg, Brussels, and Rotterdam) and Zurich with Barcelona (with a stop in Girona). Buses will operate several times a week, with frequency expected to increase to daily service in the following year. Single fares start around €180.
Twiliner has enterprising plans for expansion, aiming to link 25 of Europe’s most visited cities by 2028, creating a comprehensive network of overnight bus routes to complement existing rail services.
Who is Twiliner For?
While Twiliner aims to appeal to a broad range of travelers, the service is not ideally suited for families with very young children. Passengers under the age of five are not permitted, and the company advises that older children should be accustomed to long-distance travel and able to respect the quiet environment conducive to sleep.
