For many within the LGBTQ+ community, Pride Month is a time to celebrate their true selves.Though, the path to self-acceptance isn’t always easy. Writer, model, and content creator Lydia Okello, who identifies as non-binary, knows this firsthand.

Growing up in a Ugandan-Canadian immigrant household in a predominantly white neighborhood presented unique challenges for Okello. Raised in‍ a religious⁢ surroundings,Okello found it tough to reconcile their identity with the teachings they were exposed to.

Okello⁣ found⁣ support within the LGBTQ+ community and eventually gathered the courage to come out, ⁣nonetheless of their family’s potential reaction. The decision was fraught with anxiety, given uganda’s⁣ stance on homosexuality.

Okello described the initial family response as uneasy. raised in an⁣ Evangelical (Pentecostal) tradition,they were taught that being queer was a sin. Acceptance was a struggle at first, and Okello feared losing their family. “Over the years, we have worked things out, and it’s not a huge deal at this ‍moment,” Okello said.

Before fully embracing their identity, Okello⁤ spent years navigating a⁢ complex ‍world,⁢ dating both cisgender men and others. Fear of judgment initially kept their identity ‍hidden from family and hometown friends. Eventually, the desire for authenticity outweighed their fears.

Today, Okello embraces ⁢living authentically. “It feels amazing!” ⁢Okello said. While concerned about anti-trans legislation, Okello‍ enjoys a fulfilling⁣ life with their wife and cat. “I cannot believe how my life turned out. ⁢Younger me would be⁤ both ⁣gooped and gagged. But I think they would also just be in awe of the things we were‍ brave enough to seek for ourselves.”
