LYON, France (AP) — Springtime in Lyon can be a challenge for allergy sufferers, with pollen causing itchy eyes, scratchy throats, adn runny noses. To combat this, the Metropolis of Lyon, through its “Erasmus” innovation laboratory, has developed a digital map designed to help those with pollen allergies navigate the city with greater ease.
the interactive map, accessible online, allows users to input their starting point and destination, similar to popular navigation apps, and then calculates the most suitable pedestrian route with the least amount of pollen exposure.
Reducing pollen Exposure
According to the Metropolis of Lyon, the map considers various tree species and their flowering periods, adjusting calculations based on the time of year, from February to May and June to January. This accounts for different pollen types and levels.
The city estimates that routes suggested by the map can reduce pollen exposure by an average of 26 to 29% compared to customary routes.
The map covers over 32,000 kilometers of pedestrian routes and 17 hectares, representing 32% of the total area of the Metropolis of Lyon.
A First in France
The digital map is currently in an experimental phase. The Metropolis of Lyon emphasizes that the tool will continue to evolve based on user feedback collected through an integrated form available until at least September 2025.

“This experiment is a first in France at the level of a metropolis and is part of taking into account environmental health,” the community said in a statement.
The platform also offers maps that provide routes based on exposure to heat, noise, and tourist locations. The maps also indicate the locations of drinking water fountains, public restrooms, and benches.
