The acquisition of EK, East Kilbride, represents a defining milestone in our ongoing expansion across the Scottish retail landscape, marking our third premier shopping centre investment here in three years.

Sebastian Macdonald-Hall, chief investment officer (Europe) at M Core said of the purchase. Sheet Anchor Evolve, a division of M Core, has acquired the East Kilbride Shopping Centre located in Scotland at a cost of £20 million, successfully concluding a prolonged and intricate divestment procedure for the one-million-square-foot retail and leisure complex.

Complex Spans One Million Square Feet with 100 Brands

The vast complex spans more than one million square feet and encompasses The Plaza, Plaza Tower, Princes Mall, Princes Square, Southgate, and Olympia. The destination features a diverse mix of more than 100 brands—including Primark, New Look, JD Sports, Waterstones, Pandora, Costa Coffee, Nando’s, Matalan, Boots, and Home Bargains—and welcomes over 7.5 million visitors a year. It serves more than 78,000 local residents and a wider catchment of over 770,000 people within a 20-minute drive, while connecting directly to the town’s bus station and sitting within walking distance of its railway station.

This acquisition is the third Scottish shopping centre to join the M Core portfolio in three years, following Princes Square in Glasgow and The Centre in Livingston. The pan-European collective of property investment, management, and development companies now owns 68 sites across the UK in Scotland, with Max Parekura appointed as senior asset manager to oversee the site on behalf of Sheet Anchor Evolve.

New Owner Acquires Centre After 2022 Administration

The sale marks a dramatic change of fortunes for the shopping destination, which was placed into administration in 2022 after plunging into administration just weeks before Christmas with more than £114 million in debt, including over £2 million owed to HMRC. Alison Brown, head of enterprise and sustainable development at South Lanarkshire Council, previously noted that economic pressures and changing shopping habits had impacted the privately owned centre.

An official representative for the purchasers mentioned that the estate houses a community and entertainment facility featuring an Odeon Luxe cinema, a full-sized indoor ice rink, Carlton Bingo, a 24-hour PureGym, a children’s nursery, and a local library. Macdonald-Hall added: We are very excited to build on the existing foundations to enhance the shopping centre over time by creating a more cohesive retail and leisure experience, bringing genuine long-term success and vitality to the local area.
