The killer AI doll M3GAN, who propelled the original movie to nearly $182 million in worldwide box office earnings, is back. M3GAN 2.0 delivers the comedy fans expect, but the sequel pivots from horror to a more action-oriented storyline.
Director Gerard Johnstone’s sequel takes a page from the Terminator 2 playbook. Instead of simply rehashing the original, M3GAN 2.0 gives M3GAN (Amie Donald, Jenna Davis) a redemption arc as she faces an even greater threat.
Johnstone told Variety that the global reaction to the first film influenced the shift. He noted the race between nations to achieve artificial general intelligence (AGI), saying the story needed a bigger scope.
In the film, Gemma (Allison Williams) advocates for AI regulation, while Cady (Violet McGraw) copes with trauma through computer science and aikido. The FBI informs Gemma that M3GAN’s code survived and was used to create AMELIA (Ivanna Sakhno), a rogue military AI.
Gemma must team up with M3GAN to save the world. they are joined by colleagues Cole (Brian Jordan Alvarez) and Tess (Jen Van Epps), and tech activist Christian (Aristotle Athari), who is revealed to be AMELIA’s creator. The film serves as a cautionary tale about AI evolution, though Johnstone told Creative Screenwriting he sees it as a parenting allegory: “What happens when you don’t train it right?”
The climax sees M3GAN sacrificing herself to save cady and Gemma, defeating AMELIA and the Motherboard AI. Though,M3GAN’s source code survives,leaving the door open for future installments.
johnstone told the Hollywood Reporter that he envisions multiple sequels, saying, “I woudl not be surprised if there’s another five of these movies.”
