MA SNAP Fraud: Healey Under Fire – Shortsleeve Promises Audit

Massachusetts Faces Mounting Concerns Over Public Benefits Fraud

– Massachusetts is grappling with a surge in public benefits fraud, with recent investigations uncovering nearly $24 million in fraudulent claims for SNAP (Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program) and MassHealth assistance. The revelations have sparked criticism of Governor Maura Healey’s administration and calls for greater transparency and accountability.

The state Auditor’s Office announced late last week that its Bureau of Special Investigations (BSI) identified $11,952,288 in public assistance fraud during the fiscal year ending June 30, 2025. The largest portion of this fraud, totaling $4.1 million, was found within the SNAP program. Investigators also identified $1.3 million in fraudulent MassHealth claims. This discovery comes just a month after federal authorities announced the takedown of a $7 million SNAP fraud scheme involving two Haitian nationals, according to the Boston Herald.

The scale of the fraud has drawn sharp criticism from Republican gubernatorial candidates, who accuse Governor Healey of hindering efforts to combat the problem. Brian Shortsleeve, a Republican candidate for governor, stated on social media that experts, including Haywood Talcove, identify Massachusetts as one of the most vulnerable states to SNAP fraud. Shortsleeve alleges that Healey’s administration has repeatedly ignored warnings and failed to act decisively. He further stated his intention, if elected, to audit SNAP and all other state programs to eliminate fraud, waste, and abuse.

A whistleblower recently informed Massachusetts officials that fraud within the Department of Transitional Assistance (DTA) is “rampant,” according to a post on Shortsleeve’s Facebook page. This claim adds to the growing concerns about systemic vulnerabilities in the state’s public assistance programs.

Shortsleeve has been particularly vocal in his criticism, demanding answers from Healey regarding her decision to withhold information on SNAP recipients, including their immigration status, from the Trump Administration. He argues that this decision has contributed to the escalating fraud. “The outrageous bilking of taxpayers thanks to Maura Healey’s mismanagement is a scandal,” Shortsleeve said in a statement released on his campaign website, brianshortsleeve.com.

The recent findings underscore a broader pattern of fraud impacting public assistance programs across the state. The Auditor’s report detailed 4,179 investigations that led to the identification of the nearly $12 million in fraudulent claims. The combined total of the state auditor’s findings and the federal investigation now exceeds $24 million in identified fraud.

The situation raises questions about the effectiveness of current oversight mechanisms and the need for stronger safeguards to protect taxpayer dollars. While Governor Healey’s office has not yet responded directly to the recent criticisms, the pressure is mounting for a comprehensive review of the state’s public assistance programs and a commitment to greater transparency and accountability.

The ongoing investigations and political fallout are likely to remain a central issue in the upcoming gubernatorial election, as candidates vie to present themselves as the most effective advocate for protecting public funds and ensuring the integrity of vital social safety nets.
