Apple is experiencing supply constraints for the Mac mini and Mac Studio, a situation that CEO Tim Cook indicated could persist for “several months.” The delays are driven by unexpectedly high demand fueled by the platforms’ suitability for artificial intelligence (AI) and “agentic tools,” according to Cook’s remarks during the company’s second fiscal quarter 2026 earnings call on April 30, 2026.
“The Mac mini and the Mac Studio, both of these are amazing platforms for AI and agentic tools, and the customer recognition of that is happening faster than what we had predicted, and so we saw higher than expected demand,” Cook stated. He added, “We think, looking forward, that the Mac mini and the Mac Studio may take several months to reach supply-demand balance.”
The surge in demand has led Apple to halt sales of certain Mac Studio configurations, including those with 512GB of RAM, and to discontinue accepting orders for models with higher RAM amounts. As of last week, the base Mac mini was listed as “Currently Unavailable” on Apple’s online store due to stock depletion.
AI Demand Drives Unexpected Shortages
The unexpected demand is linked to the growing popularity of AI development platforms like OpenClaw, which developers and enthusiasts are utilizing on the Mac mini and Mac Studio due to their affordability and ease of use. OpenClaw allows users to create AI agents that can perform tasks on their desktops using their own data, offering a customizable and private AI experience.

According to Yahoo Finance, the Mac mini and Mac Studio are becoming popular choices for AI developers. The platforms’ relative affordability and ease of use are key factors in their appeal.
Impact on Apple’s Financial Performance
Despite the supply constraints, Apple’s Mac revenue increased in the second fiscal quarter of 2026, reaching $8.39 billion, up from $7.94 billion in the same period last year. This suggests that the strong demand for Macs, particularly those suited for AI tasks, is offsetting some of the negative impact of the supply issues.
Broader Industry Constraints
The supply challenges extend beyond the Mac mini and Mac Studio. Cook also noted that Apple is facing broader industry constraints related to advanced nodes and memory components. These constraints are expected to impact the company’s performance in the coming quarters, and Apple anticipates rising memory costs.
“Due to the ongoing industry constraints for advanced nodes and memory components, the company expects the supply shortages for these Macs to continue for the next several months,” 9to5Mac reported, summarizing Cook’s comments. Apple is exploring “several options” to mitigate the impact of rising memory prices.
MacBook Neo Also Facing High Demand
The supply issues aren’t limited to the Mac mini and Mac Studio. Apple is also experiencing high demand for the MacBook Neo, with Cook stating that customer response has been “off the charts.” This strong demand contributed to a record number of new Mac users in the March quarter.
The combination of strong demand for both the MacBook Neo and the Mac mini/Studio, coupled with broader industry supply chain challenges, presents a complex situation for Apple as it navigates the growing interest in AI-capable hardware.
