Microsoft is bringing a significant visual overhaul and usability improvements to OneDrive on macOS, aiming to make the cloud storage service feel more native to the Apple ecosystem. The update, rolling out now to Insiders and slated for general availability soon, introduces a redesigned Activity Center with support for Liquid Glass and modernized dialogs.

For years, OneDrive on Mac, while functional, has lagged behind other macOS applications in terms of visual integration. Microsoft acknowledges this, stating their goal is to deliver an experience that is not just usable, but “feels truly native” on macOS. The core of this update centers around a revamped menu bar interface, moving away from a cross-platform design to one that embraces the aesthetic of macOS.

The most immediately noticeable change is the adoption of Liquid Glass, a visual effect introduced in macOS 26, for the OneDrive Activity Center. This gives the menu bar window a translucent, layered appearance that aligns with the modern macOS design language. The Activity Center itself, accessed by clicking the OneDrive icon in the menu bar, has been rebuilt using SwiftUI, resulting in a snappier and more responsive interface.

The redesigned Activity Center prioritizes clarity and ease of access. Microsoft has streamlined the information presented, initially showing only essential sync status details. Users can then easily drill down for more specific information as needed. The list of recent file changes remains accessible, but is now presented in a more compact and understandable format. A key accessibility improvement is full support for VoiceOver and Full Keyboard Access, making OneDrive more usable for individuals who rely on assistive technologies.

Beyond the Activity Center, Microsoft is also updating other interface elements within OneDrive to align with the native macOS look and feel. For example, dialog boxes, such as those confirming file deletions, now utilize native macOS controls. While these changes may seem minor individually, they contribute to a more cohesive and consistent user experience.

It’s important to note that this update focuses on the user interface and experience, rather than fundamental changes to OneDrive’s core functionality. Microsoft has not announced any improvements to sync performance, stability, or underlying cloud capabilities. The service already leverages Apple’s modern file provider APIs and has native Apple Silicon support since early 2022, indicating a solid foundation in terms of performance and compatibility.

The system requirements remain unchanged: a Mac with an Intel or Apple Silicon processor running macOS 13 or later, and OneDrive data stored on an APFS-formatted disk. This ensures broad compatibility across the current range of Mac hardware.

From a user perspective, OneDrive’s synchronization on macOS has historically been reliable. The primary pain point has been the disconnect between the application’s visual design and the overall macOS aesthetic. This update directly addresses that issue, bringing OneDrive’s interface in line with the expectations of Mac users. For those who frequently work across multiple platforms, a seamless and visually consistent experience is particularly valuable.

The new interface is currently available to OneDrive Insiders, with a wider rollout planned once testing is complete. This update represents a significant step towards making OneDrive a truly first-class citizen on macOS, and a compelling cloud storage option for Apple users.
