SHOREVIEW, Minn. – For Saad Bassas, the recent fall of the Assad regime in Syria is a moment tinged with both joy and sorrow.
Bassas, a Syrian-American dentist who left his homeland over two decades ago, has only returned twice in 23 years. He cherishes the memories of his childhood in Aleppo and the rich history that permeates the ancient streets.
“What I love about my country and still love about my country is the very rich and ancient history of it,” Bassas said. “You walk streets that are thousands of years old, buildings that are hundreds of years old.”
His last visit, over a year ago, was a stark contrast to the Syria of his youth. Navigating through 20-25 checkpoints to reach his mother’s house, Bassas witnessed firsthand the devastating impact of the civil war that has ravaged the country as 2011.
“It’s really hard to see the place where you grew up, where you lived, where you still have family just kind of slip into very dark times of fighting,” he said. “I remember my uncle said he stood for like 18 hours to get bread and he walked away as he didn’t get anything.”
But two weeks ago, a glimmer of hope emerged. Rebel forces swept through the country, liberating cities long held by the Assad regime, which had ruled Syria for over half a century.
For Bassas and many Syrians around the world, the fall of the Assad regime marks a turning point.
“Literally in tears,” Bassas said. “We never thought this would happen maybe in our lifetime.”
The road to recovery will be long and arduous. The scars of war run deep, and the challenges ahead are immense. But for the first time in years, Syrians can dare to dream of a brighter future, a future where peace and stability reign once more.
syrian Regime Crumbles: Experts Weigh in on Historic Shift in the Middle East
A stunning turn of events has seen the Syrian regime teeter on the brink of collapse, marking a potential turning point in the decade-long conflict.
The swiftness of the regime’s downfall has shocked many, including international relations experts.
“There’s no doubt in my mind that this is a Berlin Wall coming down moment,” says Macalester College International Relations Professor Andrew Latham.”It is profoundly transformative of the entire region.”
However, Latham cautions against assuming a positive outcome akin to the fall of the Berlin Wall. “There are so many bad actors from an American viewpoint that we can’t be sure that it’s going to work out as well,” he adds.
A Perfect Storm for Collapse
Latham attributes the regime’s collapse to a confluence of factors.
“Russia and Iran were distracted,” he explains. “The Hay’at Tahrir al-Sham (HTS) and some of the other militias were developing their military capabilities, and the Assad regime and its army were falling apart. It’s an utterly corrupt regime. The army wasn’t willing to fight; they basically took the uniforms off,put their weapons down, and ran away.”
The Rise of HTS: A New Power Player?
Latham identifies HTS as a key player in the regime’s downfall. He describes the group as an Islamist jihadist organization with well-trained and well-equipped commando units, likely supported by Turkey, though Turkey would never publicly acknowledge this.
From Hot War to frozen Conflict and back Again
The Syrian conflict has seen dramatic shifts over the past decade.Initially a “hot war,” it transitioned into a “frozen conflict” with the intervention of Russia and Iran, who propped up the assad regime.
However, Latham suggests a change in strategy from Russia and Iran played a crucial role in the recent events. “they made a choice not to intervene [during the regime’s downfall],” he says. “They also made a decision that if you’re not going to fight for the regime, we’re not going to fight for the regime.”
The future of Syria remains uncertain. While the fall of the Assad regime represents a notable development, the rise of groups like HTS raises concerns about the potential for further instability and conflict in the region.
Syrian Rebels Seize Power, Raising Questions About Russia’s Future in the Region
Damascus, Syria – A new chapter has begun in Syria’s long and tumultuous history as rebel forces have successfully ousted the Assad regime, leaving the international community grappling with the implications of this dramatic shift.
The victory of the rebel group, which has pledged to prioritize the needs of the Syrian people, has sparked cautious optimism among some Syrians, including Bassas, a resident of Damascus. “We hope the civilians are going to rule the country,” Bassas said, expressing a sentiment shared by many weary of years of conflict and foreign intervention. “After 13 years of everybody meddling into Syrian business, every single body,we hope this time they leave us… leave the matter of syria to the Syrians.”
However, the future remains uncertain, particularly regarding Russia’s role in the region.
Military analyst Michael Latham warns that the new regime’s stance towards Russia’s military presence in Syria could have significant consequences. “They might lose their two military bases, they have a naval base and an airbase, they might lose that which is one of two of their only warm water ports,” Latham explained. “when you’re flying supplies to your various allies in Africa you have to stop off at this base to refuel. So, if they lose that base, they’re going to lose Africa.”
Latham also highlighted the potential for conflict if Russia chooses to resist the new regime. “Russia choosing to fight could have consequences resulting in diminished power,” he cautioned.
The rebel group, while presenting itself as a force for change, has a complex history.
“They’re making all the right noises and for the moment doing all the right things,” Latham observed. “But it’s an Islamist jihadist outfit that has kind of mellowed out over time, and we don’t know whether they’re going to revert to form or whether this is the dawn of a new era.”
The world watches with bated breath as Syria enters this new era, hoping for a future of peace and stability, but aware of the challenges that lie ahead.
A New Dawn for Syria? Syrian-American hopes for a Brighter Future After Assad’s Fall
Shoreview, MN – The recent upheavals in Syria, culminating in the collapse of the Assad regime, have sent ripples of hope and anticipation through the Syrian diaspora.
For Syrian-Americans like Saad Bassas, a dentist who fled the country over two decades ago, the news is a bittersweet symphony of joy and sorrow.
Bassas, who dreams of a revitalized Syria, remembers the country of his childhood with fondness, recalling the rich historical tapestry woven into the very streets of Aleppo.
“What I love about my country and still love about my country is the very rich and ancient history of it,” bassas shared.”You walk streets that are thousands of years old, buildings that are hundreds of years old.”
But Bassas’s last visit to Syria, over a year ago, was a stark contrast to the idyllic picture of his memories. The rampant civil war had left its mark, transforming the country into a shadow of its former self. He recounts navigating through countless checkpoints, witnessing firsthand the hardships endured by his people:
“It’s really hard to see the place where you grew up, where you lived, where you still have family just kind of slip into very dark times of fighting,” he said. “I remember my uncle said he stood for like 18 hours to get bread and he walked away as he didn’t get anything.”
The recent fall of the Assad regime has ignited a spark of hope in Bassas and countless others.
“Literally in tears,” Bassas admitted, “We never thought this would happen maybe in our lifetime.”
While the future remains uncertain, the possibility of a Syria free from the Assad regime’s oppressive rule is a beacon of hope for those who have longed for change.
