Rumors of a refresh to Apple’s MacBook Pro line have been circulating for some time, with initial expectations pointing to incremental updates with the M5 chip. However, more substantial changes appear to be on the horizon, slated for release in the fourth quarter of 2026. These updates promise a significant redesign, potentially marking the most substantial overhaul of the MacBook Pro since 2021.

According to reports from Korea’s The Elec, as highlighted by 9to5Mac, Apple is preparing to launch a new MacBook Pro featuring a slimmer design, a redesigned front-facing camera housing, and, crucially, an OLED display. This move to OLED technology represents a significant shift for the MacBook Pro line, currently utilizing mini-LED panels.

The iPad Pro features an OLED display

Apple first introduced its tandem OLED display technology with the iPad Pro in 2024. Tandem OLED stacks two OLED layers on top of each other, resulting in significantly increased brightness and improved contrast ratios compared to traditional OLED displays. This technology is particularly beneficial for creative professionals who demand accurate color reproduction and deep blacks in their workflows. The anticipated implementation of this technology in the MacBook Pro could offer a substantial visual upgrade for users.

Beyond the display, the redesign is expected to include a slimmer form factor and a “punch hole” style front-facing camera, replacing the current notch design. While the reports acknowledge some concerns about the potential for reduced thermal performance with a thinner chassis, recent advancements in thermal solutions suggest Apple may be able to mitigate these issues. The 16-inch MacBook Pro, often criticized for its bulkiness, could particularly benefit from a more streamlined design.

Samsung Display is reportedly gearing up for mass production of eighth-generation OLED displays for the new MacBook Pro, beginning in May. The company plans to ship two million of these displays to Apple by the end of 2026, with Foxconn handling the final assembly starting in the third quarter of 2026. While China’s BOE is also vying to supply OLED displays for the MacBook Pro, initial shipments will reportedly be exclusively sourced from Samsung.

The upcoming MacBook Pro is expected to feature 14- and 16-inch display size options and will be powered by M6-series chips. This launch will represent the first complete redesign of the MacBook Pro since 2021, signaling a significant investment in the future of Apple’s professional laptop line. Some component development is still underway, with Apple reportedly adjusting designs to reduce manufacturing costs.

The timing of this redesign is particularly noteworthy, coinciding with expectations for a folding iPhone also slated for release in 2026. This suggests a broader push from Apple towards innovation and design improvements across its product portfolio. For professional users, the combination of a redesigned chassis, a vibrant OLED display, and the power of the M6 chip could make the next MacBook Pro a compelling upgrade.
