Nobel Foundation: Prize Cannot Be Transferred to Another Individual
The nobel Foundation affirmed that a Nobel Peace Prize, onc awarded, cannot be withdrawn, shared, or transferred to another person. This statement addresses a recent proposal by Venezuelan politician María Corina Machado to present the prize to former U.S.President Donald Trump.
“Once a Nobel Prize has been awarded, it cannot be withdrawn, shared or transferred to others. The decision is final and lasts forever,”
according to a statement released by the Nobel Foundation on January 11, 2026. The Nobel Prize website provides further details on the rules governing the awards.
Machado, a vocal critic of Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro, had suggested presenting the prize to Trump as a gesture of support. However, the Nobel Foundation’s longstanding policy prohibits such transfers. The Nobel Peace Prize was most recently awarded in 2023 to Narges Mohammadi for her fight against the oppression of women in Iran. Details of the 2023 prize are available on the Nobel Prize website.
