Calls for Accountability Following Allegations of Abuse
A collective representing families of victims from Grand-Dakar and pastef Grand Dakar/Ziguinchor has issued a strong demand for an international arrest warrant targeting former Senegalese President Macky Sall. This action stems from recent statements made by Sall in European media, which the collective characterizes as deeply painful and exacerbating existing grievances.
The groups allege a pattern of abuses during Sall’s presidency (2012-2024), including “massive embezzlement of public funds, trivialization of human rights and blood crimes.” They directly attribute duty to Sall for the deaths of over 80 senegalese citizens during political demonstrations between 2021 and 2024.
Specific Cases Highlighted: The Death of Landing camara
The collective specifically cited the case of Landing Camara, a high school student killed in Grand-dakar (Ziguinchor) in 2024 following the postponement of the presidential election. Within Grand-Dakar alone, the organizations have identified 19 individuals who have suffered as victims – including those killed, injured, permanently disabled, or imprisoned – consequently of the unrest.
Denunciation of “Terrorist” Label and Plea to Current President
The signatories strongly condemned Sall’s continued use of the term “terrorists” to describe citizens and have called on current President Bassirou Diomaye Faye to “take all his responsibilities” by initiating international legal proceedings against his predecessor. They urge Faye to pursue an international arrest warrant as a means of ensuring accountability for the alleged abuses committed under Sall’s administration.
