Idiots, the third feature film directed by Macon Blair and formerly known by the working title The Sh*theads, is scheduled for a theatrical release on August 28, 2026, according to distributor Independent Film Company (IFC) and reporting from World of Reel and Cinemagoria. The dark road comedy and existential thriller follows two wildly unqualified and accident-prone transport agents hired to escort a troubled, ultra-wealthy teenager to a rehabilitation facility.

Production History and Festival Circuit Run

The film has emerged as one of the festival season’s most sought-after titles following appearances at the 2026 Sundance Film Festival and SXSW 2026, alongside serving as the opening film of the Atlanta Film Festival, as reported by Cinemagoria. According to interviews with Blair, the project experienced a prolonged and fractured development cycle. Initial screenplay conversations began in 2013, and the film was officially announced in 2017 with Luke Wilson and Tracy Morgan attached. Following Morgan’s departure and a failed distribution attempt via blockchain platforms, Blair and producer Alex Orr shelved the project for nearly a decade before reviving it. The film was rebooted in February 2025 with a new production team, including executive producers Danny McBride and David Gordon Green, and financing from Peachtree Group. WME Independent and CAA brought the title to the European Film Market, where it sparked a bidding war that ended with IFC acquiring domestic rights. Blair noted that despite the initial years of setbacks, the final iteration of the project turned out the way it was meant to be.

Cast Dynamics and Onscreen Chaos

The narrative centers on Davis, played by O’Shea Jackson Jr., and Mark, played by Dave Franco, as two wayward young men whose poor judgment triggers a chaotic cross-country trip. According to Cinemagoria and main source materials, the pair is tasked with escorting Sheridan, played by Mason Thames, a sociopathic TikTok star with no moral compass who is guarded by a militia of fanatics led by Koko, played by Peter Dinklage. Additional supporting roles include Nicholas Braun and Kiernan Shipka. Blair stated that Franco was the first actor approached for the project, and Franco suggested bringing in Jackson. Blair praised Jackson’s unexpected emotional depth on set, noting that the actor could transition into genuine vulnerability during tense scenes. While the production kept tight to a written script to maintain the pacing of a detective-style narrative, Blair allowed Franco and Jackson room to improvise overlapping arguments and insults. The sound of their voices is the payoff, not the words themselves, Macon Blair Cinematographer Guillermo Garza provided the film’s gritty visual design, while brothers Will and Brooke Blair composed the percussive score, and Hunter Brown handled the editing. Review tallies place the film with a 67 on Metacritic and a 73% approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes following its festival screenings, according to World of Reel.
