Macron on the Brink: Over 300,000 Demand French President’s Impeachment in Shocking Petition
Macron Impeachment Petition Gains Momentum in France
Over 300,000 people have signed a petition calling for the impeachment of French President Emmanuel Macron, launched by the left-wing party La France insoumise (LFI) on August 31.
The petition, which has gained significant traction, has collected 311,000 signatures as of September 17, according to the petition’s website.
The petition’s text states that Macron’s refusal to recognize the result of the legislative elections by appointing Michel Barnier as prime minister is an “authoritarian feat” that is “unprecedented in the world of parliamentary systems and in the system of representative democracy.”
Draft Decision on Impeachment Procedure
In addition to the petition, the Popular Front announced on August 31 that it had submitted a draft decision to the office of the National Assembly, calling for the impeachment of the president.
The office deemed the impeachment procedure acceptable, describing it as “an unprecedented event in the history of the Fifth Republic.”
The draft decision was presented to the Law Committee, which may decide not to present the text to parliament.
Government Formation and Protests
Emmanuel Macron’s decision to dissolve the National Assembly and organize legislative elections led to the left-wing coalition New Popular Front winning the majority of seats.
The appointment of Michel Barnier as prime minister triggered massive protests from supporters of left-wing parties, who had demanded the appointment of their representative to this position.
Barnier promised that the new government would be formed during the week of September 16 to 22.
Impeachment Process
If two-thirds of the votes in the National Assembly are adopted, the document will have to go through a vote in the Senedd (upper house), then through a joint vote of both chambers.
The process is expected to take a significant amount of time, and the outcome is far from guaranteed.
