Macy’s Announces Closure of 66 Stores Nationwide, Including Nine in New York

Iconic Retailer Shifts Strategy to Focus on profitable Locations and Digital Growth

New York City’s beloved Macy’s Herald Square may remain a timeless shopping destination, but teh retail giant is making tough decisions to streamline its operations. On Thursday, Macy’s Inc. confirmed plans to close 66 underperforming stores across the U.S., including nine locations in New York State—five of which are in New York City.

The move is part of Macy’s “Bold New Chapter” strategy, aimed at revitalizing the company by focusing on profitable stores and enhancing the customer experience.

“Closing any store is never easy, but as part of our Bold New Chapter strategy, we are closing underproductive Macy’s stores to allow us to focus our resources and prioritize investments in our go-forward stores, where customers are already responding positively to better product offerings and elevated service,” said Tony Spring, chairman and CEO of Macy’s Inc., in a statement.

Which New York Macy’s Locations Are Closing?

The closures will impact several New York locations, including:

  • Queens Place Macy’s in Elmhurst
  • Sheepshead Bay and Fulton Street locations in Brooklyn
  • Staten Island Furniture store
  • fordham Place in the Bronx
  • Lake Success in New Hyde Park
  • Melville Mall in Huntington
  • Sunrise Mall in Massapequa
  • Mall at greece Ridge in Rochester

A Strategic Shift for Macy’s

The closures are part of a broader plan to close approximately 150 underperforming stores over the next three years while investing in 350 “go-forward” locations. The strategy aims to deliver lasting and profitable sales growth by fiscal 2026.

Macy’s is also doubling down on its digital presence, encouraging customers to shop online as brick-and-mortar locations dwindle. The company’s focus on e-commerce reflects a broader trend in retail, as consumers increasingly turn to online shopping for convenience and variety.

What This Means for Shoppers

For New Yorkers, the closures mean fewer in-store options, but Macy’s remains committed to serving customers through its robust online platform. The iconic Herald Square location, however, remains untouched—a beacon of hope for loyal shoppers who cherish the in-store experience.

As Macy’s navigates this pivotal chapter, the company’s ability to adapt to changing consumer habits will determine its future success. For now, New Yorkers can take solace in the fact that their beloved Herald square flagship isn’t going anywhere.

Stay tuned for updates on Macy’s evolving strategy and how it impacts your favorite shopping destinations.
