Updated June 11, 2025
The search for Madeleine McCann has yielded new potential evidence. Two firearms were discovered last week near Lagos, Portugal, according to reports. These items, along with bone fragments and clothing, have been sent to Germany for further examination.
German and Portuguese investigators concluded a three-day evidence hunt across a 120-acre area. The Madeleine McCann examination aims to gather more evidence against Christian Brueckner, the primary suspect in the case. The search area was located approximately 30 miles from where three-year-old Madeleine disappeared in May 2007.
While early reports suggested the search produced no fresh leads, the discovery of the firearms marks a significant advancement.Authorities have not released details about the type of firearms found. Although investigators believe the bones are animal remains, smaller pieces will undergo analysis.
The search area lies between Brueckner’s former residence and the apartment in Praia da Luz where the McCann family stayed. British officers were not involved in the recent searches, according to the Metropolitan Police. Madeleine’s parents have not commented, respecting the “active police investigation,” according to the Find Madeleine campaign.
The teams meticulously searched scrubland and dilapidated buildings, including a crumbling farmhouse. A source told Berlin Morning Post that several objects were discovered and are undergoing detailed examination. Portuguese media reported that clothing debris and bones were among the items found.
German officials are leading the search as part of their ongoing efforts to gather evidence against Brueckner. He is currently imprisoned for raping a 72-year-old woman in Praia da Luz in 2005 and is scheduled for release this September unless new charges are filed.
Last October, a German court acquitted Brueckner of separate sexual offenses allegedly committed in Portugal between 2000 and 2017. A recent documentary also revealed unsettling circumstantial evidence at an abandoned warehouse previously owned by Brueckner in Neuwegersleben, Germany.
What’s next
The forensic analysis of the firearms, bone fragments, and clothing discovered will be crucial in determining whether they provide any new leads in the disappearance of Madeleine McCann and potentially lead to new charges against Christian Brueckner.
