Madison School Shooting: Medical examiner Identifies All Victims
MADISON, Wis. — The Dane County medical examiner’s office has identified all three individuals who tragically lost their lives in Monday’s shooting at Abundant Life Christian School.
Erin M. West, 42, of Deforest, a beloved teacher at the school, and Rubi P. Vergara, 14, a freshman student, were pronounced dead at the scene. Natalie “Samantha” L. Rupnow, 15, of Madison, the shooter, was pronounced dead at a local hospital.
Forensic autopsies confirmed that West and Vergara died from homicidal firearm-related trauma.Rupnow’s death was also attributed to firearm-related trauma, with additional testing underway.
The shooting occurred during a mixed-grade study hall. A second-grade teacher heroically called 911, and officers arrived within three minutes.
Six others were wounded in the attack. Two students remain in critical condition, while a teacher and three students were treated for non-life-threatening injuries. Two of the injured have already been released from the hospital.
Madison Police Chief Shon Barnes stated that investigators are diligently working to determine a motive for the shooting.Police have searched Rupnow’s home on Delaware Boulevard, approximately 8 miles from the school, and her family is cooperating with the inquiry.
