Madonna made a surprise appearance during Sabrina Carpenter’s headlining set at the Coachella Valley Music and Arts Festival on Friday night, joining the pop star on stage for performances of “Vogue,” “Like a Prayer” and a new duet.
The collaboration occurred as Carpenter was performing “Juno” during her Weekend Two headlining set, with Madonna emerging near the end of the song to take the stage. The two artists launched into a rendition of Madonna’s 1990 hit “Vogue,” followed by what appeared to be an unreleased track from her upcoming album.
After the performance, Madonna addressed the audience, reflecting on the significance of the moment. She noted that twenty years prior, on the same date, she had performed at Coachella for the first time, debuting material from her album “Confessions on a Dance Floor” in America.
“20 years ago today I performed at Coachella — I was at the dance tent,” Madonna said from the stage. “It was the first time I performed Confessions from the dancefloor. Same boots, same corsets… it’s like a full circle moment.”
She also highlighted the astrological alignment of the evening, pointing out that it coincided with the new moon in Taurus and a rare planetary configuration.
“I also want to point out it’s the new moon of Taurus. Seven planets lined up in Aries… avoid confrontations. In all circumstances — for the rest of the month — let’s try to get along, let’s try to be together, let’s try to avoid disagreements,” Madonna told the crowd.
The pair then performed “Like a Prayer” before Madonna exited the stage. Earlier in the week, Madonna had announced that her long-awaited album, “Confessions On A Dance Floor: Part II,” would be released on July 3 via Warner Records, marking her first studio album since “Madame X” in 2019.
Carpenter expressed gratitude for Madonna’s appearance, responding to her thanks with, “No thanks needed, Madonna. You can have whatever you want.” The interaction underscored a mutual respect between the two artists, with Madonna describing the reunion as both nostalgic and meaningful.
The performance was widely noted as one of the most memorable moments of the festival, drawing significant attention from attendees and viewers of the live stream. It represented a rare intergenerational collaboration between two prominent figures in pop music, tied to a personal milestone in Madonna’s career history at the festival.
