Maduro Issues Warning to Opposition: “They Will Regret It”
CARACAS. Nicolás Maduro, the Venezuelan leader, has issued a stern warning to the opposition, claiming they will “regret” any attempts to interfere with the Constitution, peace, or the people of Venezuela.
Accusations Against Opposition Coalition
Maduro accused the opposition coalition, known as the Plataforma Unitaria Democrática (PUD), of promoting destabilization. He labeled this group as having a “fascist, criminal, and murderous” faction that seeks to undermine the country’s sovereignty and instigate a coup similar to the 2002 event known as the “Carmonazo,” in which the late Hugo Chávez was temporarily ousted.
U.S. Recognizes New President
In a related note, U.S. Secretary of State Antony Blinken stated that the Venezuelan people voiced their choice on July 28 by electing Edmundo González as president. He emphasized that democracy requires respect for the voters’ decision. The Biden Administration had recognized González as the winner of the elections on August 1 but had not previously referred to him as “president-elect.”
