CARACAS, Venezuela – Magalli Meda, one of five opposition members recently departed from the Argentine Embassy in Caracas, alleged Wednesday night that her home in the Venezuelan capital was attacked by forces loyal to President Nicolás Maduro.
Meda also refuted claims by Diosdado Cabello, a leading figure in the Maduro government, regarding purported negotiations surrounding her departure and that of the other four opposition members who had been residing at the Argentine diplomatic mission for several months.
“Jorge Olavarría and I, Magalli Meda, denounce that at this moment, while Cabello lies about alleged negotiations for our departure, his violent repressive arm acts in Caracas,” Meda stated in a post on X, formerly Twitter. “These images were obtained remotely a few moments ago.”
The images accompanying Meda’s statement reportedly depict hooded individuals dressed in black inspecting the residences of both Olavarría and Meda.
Cabello, in a speech Wednesday, downplayed the significance of the opposition members’ departure. He claimed that Claudia Macero, one of the five, had left the embassy independently around Aug. 20. “On his own, he annoyed herself and left quickly,” Cabello said.
Cabello further asserted that María Corina Machado, a prominent opposition leader, orchestrated the departure of herself, her mother, and the four remaining opposition members from the embassy.
U.S. Involvement
U.S. officials have also commented on the situation. Marco Rubio, confirmed the arrival of the five opposition members in the United States following what he described as a ”successful rescue.”
“After a precise operation, all hostages are now safe in American territory,” Rubio wrote on X. “Maduro’s illegitimate regime has undermined Venezuelan institutions, violated human rights and put our regional security in danger. We extend our gratitude to all the personnel involved in this operation and our partners who helped ensure the safe liberation of these Venezuelan heroes.”
Besides Meda and Macero, the other opposition members who had sought refuge in the embassy were Omar González, Pedro Urruchurtu, and Humberto Villalobos.
They initially sought refuge at the diplomatic headquarters following arrest warrants issued by the Maduro regime on March 20,2024,amid escalating tensions before the July 28 elections.
