Tuban, East Java - A recent incident involving alleged insect larvae found in student mealboxes has sparked concern and a swift response from the School Meal Program (SPPG) operators in tuban, East Java. The finding, which quickly went viral on social media, has led to an examination and new directives aimed at ensuring food safety and quality.
The controversy erupted on Tuesday,July 15,2025,when a video surfaced on the @tubanviral Instagram account. The footage, reportedly filmed by students at Tambakboyo State high School 1 and Tambakboyo State Vocational High School, showed mealboxes containing rice, lettuce, tomatoes, and chicken. Within the video, white, worm-like creatures, resembling maggots, were clearly visible crawling on the chicken and in the accompanying broth. The post quickly gained traction, raising alarm among parents and the wider community.
SPPG Responds: “Vegetable Maggots,” Not Actual Maggots
Dadan,a representative for the SPPG,addressed the claims on Friday,July 18,2025,confirming that the program had indeed received a report of four trays containing larvae out of over 3,400 distributed on its opening day,Monday,July 14,2025. Though, dadan vehemently denied that the creatures were actual maggots.
“One of the foods that is served raw is vegetables. Other ingredients are processed ones. So live maggots are impractical,” Dadan explained, asserting that the larvae were likely “vegetable maggots.” He elaborated that the insects were probably present in the raw vegetables served alongside the cooked components of the meal.
Immediate Action and New Food Safety Directives
Following the viral video and the initial report, the SPPG took immediate steps to address the situation. Dadan assured that no further reports of insects in the mealboxes were received on the following day.
To prevent future occurrences and reinforce food safety standards, the SPPG issued a circular to all mealbox kitchen operators. The directive outlines two key mandates:
Thorough Processing of All food Items
The circular mandates that all food items placed in meal trays or containers must be thoroughly processed. This includes ensuring that all ingredients are either fully cooked or,at the very least, dipped in hot water. This measure is directly linked to Dadan’s belief that the insects originated from raw vegetables, emphasizing the need for proper preparation of all components.
Furthermore,Dadan stressed the critical importance of carefully selecting nutritious meal menus that do not pose risks or cause issues for students. “We have issued a circular for SPPG to create menus that do not pose risks or cause issues,” he stated, highlighting the commitment to providing safe and healthy meals. As an insect expert and an educator at IPB University, Dadan’s insights underscore the technical considerations behind food safety protocols. the SPPG’s swift response and proactive measures aim to restore confidence in the school meal program and ensure the well-being of the students.
