Spider-Man Magic: The Gathering Set Will Not Be Limited to a Single print Run

Rumors Debunked: Supply concerns Addressed
Last week, the Magic: the Gathering community was abuzz with speculation that the upcoming Spider-Man set (set code: SPM) would have a limited print run across all product types, including the crucial Play Boosters. These concerns, fueled by recent supply issues with other popular sets, have now been officially addressed by Wizards of the Coast (WOTC).
A WOTC representative confirmed to IGN that there is no truth to any rumors about SPM Play Boosters being a single print run.
This clarification is a significant relief for players, particularly those focused on the Standard format, where consistent card availability is vital.
Why the Concern? The Precedent of Limited Printings
While limited print runs are common for premium products like collector boosters - which feature special art and foil treatments - the possibility of a limited run on Play Boosters raised alarm bells. Play Boosters are the foundational booster packs for most sets, designed to meet the demand of a broad player base. Restricting their availability could have created artificial scarcity and driven up prices, benefiting scalpers.
These fears weren’t unfounded. WOTC CEO chris Cox recently acknowledged that they couldn’t produce enough
of the Final Fantasy set, leading to considerable price increases despite quadrupling pre-release production, as reported by IGN. This experience highlighted the potential consequences of supply chain issues within the game.
A Unique Release: Digital Reskin and Universes Beyond
the Spider-Man set is already notable for its unique approach to digital releases. WOTC announced that the entire set will be reskinned with in-universe art and concepts for both MTG Arena and Magic: the Gathering Online. This marks the first time a Standard set has received this treatment.
While other Universes Beyond
crossovers, such as the Doctor Who set, have not been fully available digitally, those releases were primarily focused on the Commander format. A Standard set’s digital availability has a much wider impact, influencing competitive play across multiple formats.
What We Know About Supply and Licensing
Despite confirming there won’t be a single print run, WOTC has not disclosed the overall supply of the Spider-Man set. Speculation regarding potential limitations tied to the licensing agreement with Disney, which grants WOTC the rights to use Marvel properties, remains unaddressed – a predictable outcome given the company’s broader denial of the rumors.
Looking Ahead: Release Dates and Ongoing Reveals
Card reveals for the Spider-Man set began at San Diego Comic-Con last month, alongside previews of the upcoming Avatar: The Last Airbender set (which will be available digitally). The Spider-Man set is officially scheduled to launch on August 29, with a physical release following on September 26.
