Edinburgh erupted in Jambos joy on Wednesday night as Heart of Midlothian secured a crucial 1-0 victory over Hibernian in a tightly contested Edinburgh derby. A late strike from substitute Tomas Magnusson in the 88th minute sent the Tynecastle faithful into raptures and extended Hearts’ lead at the summit of the Scottish Premiership.

The win pushes Derek McInnes’ side six points clear of Rangers, who have a game in hand, and a commanding nine points ahead of Celtic, who have two games in hand. The result underscores Hearts’ impressive form this season, demonstrating a knack for grinding out results even when not at their best.

McInnes opted to hand a first start to January signing Islam Chesnokov, injecting fresh energy into the Hearts attack. Frankie Kent also returned to the starting eleven, replacing the suspended Craig Halkett following his sending off against St Mirren last week.

Hibs manager David Gray made two changes to the side that defeated Dundee United, bringing in Nicky Cadden and Kai Andrews for Jordan Obita and Élie Youan respectively.

The atmosphere at Tynecastle was electric from the opening whistle, and Hearts started with intent. Landry Kaboré nearly opened the scoring early on, driving a low effort just wide after a skillful run from the right flank. Cláudio Braga followed with an acrobatic attempt that sailed over the bar.

Hibs responded with a counter-attack in the ninth minute, Felix Passlack driving towards the Hearts box, but his pass to Martin Boyle was overhit. Cadden received the ball and unleashed an angled shot that was deflected away by Kent.

The first half was a typically frenetic derby affair, with both sides struggling to establish sustained periods of possession. Hearts continued to probe, with Chesnokov seeing his effort blocked by Hibs goalkeeper Raphael Sallinger, and Alexandros Kyziridis shooting over from just outside the box.

Kaboré came close again in the 41st minute, his shot deflecting off Munashe Garananga and falling into the path of Chesnokov, who blazed over under pressure from Sallinger.

Hibs grew into the game as the half progressed, threatening just before the break when Boyle turned in the box and saw his low shot saved by Alexander Schwolow.

The second half saw Hearts test Sallinger for the first time, Harry Milne unleashing a low shot from 20 yards after a well-worked corner.

Hibs began to apply more pressure around the hour mark, Cadden’s delivery across the face of goal requiring a brilliant intervention from Kyziridis to prevent Boyle from scoring. Boyle himself went close in the 69th minute, fizzing a shot just over the bar from another Cadden delivery.

However, it was Hearts who ultimately found the breakthrough. In the 88th minute, Milne’s low cross from the left was met by the onrushing Magnusson, who forced the ball into the net to spark scenes of jubilation at Tynecastle.

The late goal secured a vital three points for Hearts, solidifying their position at the top of the Scottish Premiership and sending a clear message to their title rivals. While the performance may not have been their most polished, McInnes’ side once again demonstrated their resilience and ability to win even when not at their best – a characteristic that will undoubtedly serve them well in the title race.
