Asia’s Most Welcoming Cities Crowned in 2026 Traveller Review Awards
Hospitality and service are increasingly vital factors for tourists when selecting destinations. According to the 2026 Traveller Review Awards by Booking.com, Magong in Taiwan and Takayama in Japan have earned places among the top ten most welcoming cities globally.
The awards are based on an analysis of more than 370 million verified reviews submitted by travelers worldwide. A total of 1.81 million travel partners were recognized for their commitment to providing authentic and reliable experiences. James Waters, Chief Business Officer of Booking.com, emphasized that a personal touch from local residents is key to creating a truly memorable trip.
“From welcoming hosts who go above and beyond for guest stays to expert taxi drivers sharing ‘local-only’ tips, these personal touches can make a trip truly special for travellers,” Waters said, as reported by ITTN.
Magong, Taiwan: A ‘Hidden Gem’
Magong, situated on the western coast of Penghu Island, Taiwan, secured the second-highest ranking worldwide. Described as a “hidden gem,” the port city offers a more tranquil atmosphere than many other major Asian metropolises. Despite its bustling port, Magong seamlessly blends historical sites, vibrant markets, and picturesque coastal views.
Travelers consistently praise the warmth of the local people, particularly when visiting historical landmarks like the Tianhou Temple in the Old Street night market. Visitors can also explore local fishing villages and farms, enjoying fresh seafood and regional beverages while experiencing the genuine hospitality of Penghu residents. This combination of cultural heritage, natural beauty, and welcoming locals creates an authentic and unforgettable experience for visitors to Taiwan’s islands.
Takayama, Japan: Tradition and Hospitality in the Hida Mountains
Takayama, Japan, claimed the eighth position on the list. Located high in the mountainous Hida region, the city is known for its preservation of traditions from the Edo period. Tourists are captivated by the hospitality found in the historic Sanmachi Suji district.
Beyond the refined service offered at traditional Japanese inns, or Ryokan, the warm interactions at the Miyagawa morning market are frequently cited as a reason for Takayama’s reputation for openness and friendliness towards international tourists.
The Hida Folk Village and the nearby UNESCO World Heritage Site of Shirakawa-go showcase centuries-old rural architecture, adding depth to any visit. Visitors can savor Hida beef, grilled yakiniku-style, or enjoy a comforting bowl of ramen, alongside local specialties like grilled Hoba miso served on magnolia leaves. Takayama offers a warm and memorable immersion into traditional Japanese culture, cuisine, and craftsmanship.
Growing Hospitality Trends Across Asia
The report also highlights a significant increase in hospitality across Asia, with South Korea and Japan experiencing growth of 46 and 29 percent, respectively, in the number of travel partners recognized for their friendly service. This trend suggests that Asian countries are increasingly prioritizing the quality of local services to attract international tourism.
