Hungarian Opposition Leader Accuses Ruling Party of Smear Campaign
Budapest, Hungary – – Péter Magyar, leader of Hungary’s Tisza Party and a leading contender in April’s election, has publicly accused the ruling Fidesz party of preparing a blackmail campaign against him involving a secretly recorded intimate video. Magyar claims the video, allegedly depicting him with a former girlfriend, is intended to divert attention from recent controversies surrounding the government.
Magyar announced the impending release of the video on his Facebook page, stating he is a 45-year-old man with an active personal life. He alleges the recording was made using intelligence-agency tools and may be released as early as tomorrow. He insists there is nothing improper about the encounter, noting his former girlfriend was of legal age.
The accusation comes amidst growing scrutiny of the Orbán government. Magyar has recently highlighted a report detailing alleged poisoning and exploitation of workers at a Samsung factory in Göd, claiming the government was aware of the issues and offered support to the company. He also referenced accusations of misappropriation of funds by the Hungarian National Bank and alleged abuses within child-protection institutions.
Mysterious Website Fuels Speculation
The allegations surfaced shortly after a mysterious website, radnaimark.hu, appeared online earlier this week. The site initially displayed a picture of a disheveled bed with a “coming soon” message. The message later changed to “once upon a time…” accompanied by the date August 3, 2024, suggesting the video may have been recorded on that date.
The website quickly became a subject of intense speculation on social media, with users sharing memes and theories about its content. Reports indicate some internet service providers have blocked access to the site, with Telekom attributing the blockage to its Netvédelem Plus security service, which automatically restricts access to potentially threatening sites. The National Media and Communications Authority also received multiple reports requesting the website be blocked.
According to Magyar, the video is an attempt to distract from the controversies surrounding the government, particularly the allegations concerning the Samsung factory. Between 2021 and 2023, the factory reportedly poisoned and exploited its workers, allegedly prioritizing profit over worker safety by avoiding investment in air purification systems.
Fidesz parliamentarian Tamás Menczer responded to Magyar’s claims on social media, stating, “It has been revealed that Péter Magyar lives a double life: he shows one face to the public and another at night. He admitted it. A two-faced, lying figure.” Menczer’s statement followed Magyar’s announcement regarding the anticipated release of the video.
Magyar has three underage children, and expressed concern that the public release of the recording could put their safety at risk. He has framed the situation as a “Russian-style” smear campaign, echoing accusations leveled by others regarding the tactics employed by the Orbán government.
The unfolding situation is likely to intensify the already heated political climate in Hungary as the April election approaches. The allegations and the potential release of the video raise questions about the lengths to which political opponents may go to influence the outcome of the vote.
