Polling staff in Mumbai Suburban displayed their ink-marked fingers after voting by postal ballot for the Maharashtra Assembly elections. The vote count is currently underway for 288 constituencies across the state, including areas like Dharavi, Sion Koliwada, and Colaba.

Voting took place on November 20 in a single phase. The results are expected amid notable political shifts in Maharashtra. In the 2019 elections, the BJP-led alliance won a majority.

The ruling Mahayuti alliance, which includes the BJP, Nationalist Congress Party, and Shiv Sena, is promoting the ‘Majhi Ladki Bahin’ scheme for women to maintain their power. The BJP’s slogans, such as “Batenge toh katenge” and “Ek hai toh safe hai,” have led opposition parties to accuse them of dividing votes by religion.

The MVA coalition is countering these claims by focusing on social justice, caste-based censuses, and constitutional protections.

Today’s election results will show voter sentiments in Mumbai Suburban, Mumbai City, and throughout the state regarding the rearrangement of party alliances.

This year’s election saw a 28% increase in candidates, totaling 4,136, up from 3,239 in 2019. Among these, 2,086 are independents. More than 150 candidates are challenging their parties’ official nominees.

Maharashtra has 1,00,186 polling booths this year, an increase from 96,654 in 2019. In Mumbai, police set restrictions around all 36 counting centers to maintain order during the results announcement.
