Maharashtra & Jharkhand Election Results: BJP Seeks Power, Opposition Aims for Comeback
Maharashtra and Jharkhand Election Results Overview
The counting of votes for the Maharashtra and Jharkhand assembly elections will occur on Saturday. The results will reveal the outcomes of a challenging month-long election campaign.
Maharashtra
In Maharashtra, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and its Mahayuti alliance aim to retain power. The opposition Maha Vikas Aghadi (MVA) is vying for a comeback. The state saw a voter turnout of 66.05% on November 20, an increase from 61% in the previous elections five years ago.
Chief Electoral Officer S Chockalingam noted significant voter list updates coordinated by the Election Commission of India.
Here’s an overview of seat distribution:
- Mahayuti Alliance: BJP (148 seats), Eknath Shinde’s Shiv Sena (80 seats), Ajit Pawar-led NCP (52 seats), with additional seats contested by Mahayuti candidates.
- Maha Vikas Aghadi: Congress (102 seats), Shiv Sena (UBT) (96 seats), NCP (SP) (86 seats), with a couple of seats for Samajwadi Party and smaller allies.
Recent exit polls suggest that Mahayuti may secure victory, although the competition appears close. In the 2019 assembly elections, BJP won 105 seats, and the undivided Shiv Sena secured 56.
Political dynamics shifted when Uddhav Thackeray’s Shiv Sena split from the NDA. The alliance formed the MVA government but collapsed less than three years later when Eknath Shinde led a rebellion. Shinde subsequently became Chief Minister on June 30, 2022.
Jharkhand
Jharkhand recorded a voter turnout of 67.74%, the highest since the state’s inception in 2000. Most exit polls indicate a likely win for the BJP-led NDA, although some predict a significant victory for the Jharkhand Mukti Morcha-Congress alliance.
Chief Minister Hemant Soren ran from Barhait, while his wife contested from Gandey. The BJP’s Leader of Opposition, Amar Kumar Bauri, ran from Chandankiyari.
The NDA criticized the JMM-led coalition over allegations of corruption. In contrast, the ruling party promoted welfare initiatives and accused the BJP-led central government of using enforcement agencies against opponents.
The results in both states will have far-reaching implications for the political landscape ahead.
