Mahershala Ali stars as Latif, a devout Muslim contract killer in Houston who balances his hits with raising three children, in the genre thriller Your Mother Your Mother Your Mother, directed by Bassam Tariq.
A Devout Killer Wielding a Samurai Code
Mahershala Ali stars as Latif, a Koran-teaching family man and secret hitman in Houston whose life gets thrown into turmoil after his wife dies shortly after giving birth, theguardian.com reported. Latif fashions himself a righteous killer who dispenses divine retribution to victims he believes have offended God. Writer and director Bassam Tariq explained that Latif’s character is swinging around a blade, according to theguardian.com.
Additional coverage from bookandfilmglobe.com describes the film as an Islamic version of the insular religious world from Witness, crossed with the samurai parental care in Lone Wolf and Cub and the vengeful sword-wielding wrath of Kill Bill. The Saturday Evening Post notes that Latif takes a phone call conveying his wife’s death while finishing a job in a St. Louis men’s room, forcing him to rush back to Texas where his baby’s digestive system rejects formula and requires fresh breast milk.
Clashing Faiths and Political Tensions in Houston
The film explores the hostility and tension between siloed faiths and ideologies in Houston, contrasting Latif’s struggle as a single father with John Cho’s character, Pastor Hwan, a militant evangelical Christian posting fire-and-brimstone sermons online, theguardian.com reported.
Bookandfilmglobe.com reports that Latif’s frequent employer, an Arab businessman, wants him to take out Pastor Hwan for placing a contract on a nephew who produces Middle Eastern-centric porn. The Saturday Evening Post adds that Pastor Hwan’s bombastic manner mirrors YouTube yahoos, while Latif’s local mosque—where Sheikh Abdul Malik, played by Giancarlo Esposito, is his imam—attempts to steer a moral course through an immoral world.
From a Scrapped Marvel Reboot to Independent Triumph
Your Mother Your Mother Your Mother arrives following the collapse of Marvel’s Blade reboot, which also attached Ali to star and Tariq to direct, yahoo.com reported. Tariq recalled that they came very close to shooting before production halted in 2022 because they lacked a finished script, noting that Marvel’s process at the time prioritized action choreography before story development, according to theguardian.com.
Critical reception for the new thriller has been positive, holding a 97% critics score on Rotten Tomatoes based on 60 reviews, yahoo.com reported. Reviewers including Jourdain Searles at The Hollywood Reporter praised Ali for radiating warmth and strength as an imposing man of few words, while IndieWire’s Katie Rife noted that some promising themes get lost in the chaos of over-the-top side characters and bloody set pieces.
