Mahmoud Hegazy: Harassment Accusations, Arrest & Investigation Details

Egyptian actor Mahmoud Hegazy is facing renewed legal scrutiny following allegations of harassment and a separate case involving alleged assault on his wife. The actor, who has been the subject of public controversy in recent weeks, posted a Quranic verse on social media following his arrest in the harassment case, a move interpreted by some as a defense against the accusations.

Details of the Harassment Allegation

The latest case stems from a complaint filed with Cairo security directorate accusing Hegazy of harassing a woman with both Egyptian and foreign nationality inside a hotel in the Boulaq Abu El-Ela district. Security forces responded by arresting Hegazy and initiating an investigation, according to reports.

During initial questioning, Hegazy reportedly told investigators he met the complainant through a social media application and that their meeting at the hotel occurred approximately a month prior to the complaint. He characterized the encounter as stemming from a business relationship, according to sources.

Detention and Bail

Following his arrest, Hegazy was held for 24 hours pending further investigation. Authorities ordered a review of surveillance footage and communication records related to the alleged incident. The Public Prosecution subsequently decided to release Hegazy on a bail of 50,000 Egyptian pounds, pending the completion of the investigation.

The prosecution’s decision came after hearing Hegazy’s statement and confronting him with the charges. Authorities also ordered that he be presented to the Egyptian Forensic Medicine Authority, and directed criminal investigation departments to further investigate the circumstances surrounding the report.

Ongoing Legal Battles

This latest development comes as Hegazy is also awaiting the start of a trial related to allegations of assaulting his wife. The first session of that trial is scheduled for February 21st before the Egyptian Misdemeanors Court.

According to reports, security services received a complaint from Hegazy’s wife alleging a domestic dispute escalated into physical assault at their residence in 6th of October City. Following the complaint, statements were taken from both parties and an investigation was launched.

Social Media Response

After news of his arrest in the harassment case spread, Hegazy posted a verse from the Quran on his official Instagram account. The post, which read, “And they plot, and Allah plots, and Allah is the best of plotters,” was widely interpreted as a message of defiance and a belief that the truth would ultimately prevail. The post sparked debate online, with supporters and critics offering differing interpretations.

Concerns Over Son

In a separate post on social media, Hegazy expressed concern over his inability to see his son, stating, “No matter what you do, I will not give up on preventing my son from traveling, whom I am deprived of. Until now, my father and mother have not seen him at all since he was born and is now a year and a half old, and he has been in Egypt for 5 months… God exists and I am stronger than anything because I have the right… I have entrusted my affair to God.”

The actor’s legal troubles continue to unfold, with two separate cases now demanding his attention. The outcomes of both trials remain to be seen, but the allegations have already cast a shadow over his career and public image.
