Cluj-Napoca, Romania – Maja Chwalińska of Poland secured a historic victory on Wednesday, February 4, 2026, defeating Olga Danilović of Serbia in a thrilling three-set match at the WTA Transylvania Open. The win marks Chwalińska’s first-ever quarterfinal appearance in a WTA singles tournament.
Chwalińska, who successfully navigated the qualifying rounds before dispatching Ana Bogdan in the first round, faced the seventh-seeded Danilović in the Round of 16. The match proved to be a rollercoaster, with momentum swinging dramatically between the two players.
The opening set belonged entirely to Chwalińska. She started strongly, winning the first game without dropping a point and quickly building a 5-0 lead. Danilović struggled to find her rhythm, committing several unforced errors, including two double faults. Chwalińska closed out the set with a dominant 6-1 scoreline.
However, Danilović responded emphatically in the second set. She held serve and then broke Chwalińska to take a 2-0 lead. A brief respite for the Polish player, breaking back, was quickly erased as Danilović regained the advantage and continued to dictate play. Danilović ultimately won the second set 6-1, leveling the match and forcing a deciding third set.
The third set saw Chwalińska regain control. She raced to a 2-0 lead, capitalizing on errors from Danilović. Danilović briefly paused play to receive medical attention for her hand, but the interruption didn’t alter the course of the set. Chwalińska continued to press, extending her lead to 4-0 with another break of serve.
Despite a late surge from Danilović, who managed to break back and reduce the deficit to 4-2, Chwalińska held her nerve. She secured a crucial break in the final game, sealing the set 6-2 and the match overall with a final score of 6-1, 1-6, 6-2.
The victory propels Chwalińska into the quarterfinals, where she will face either Emma Raducanu or Kaja Juvan. This marks a significant milestone in her career, surpassing her previous best result in a WTA singles tournament – reaching the second round in Jassy last year.
The match showcased Chwalińska’s adaptability and resilience. After a dominant first set, she weathered the storm of Danilović’s comeback and found a way to regain control in the decisive third set. Her ability to exploit her opponent’s errors and maintain composure under pressure proved to be key to her success.
Elsewhere in the tournament, Emma Raducanu and Kaja Juvan are set to compete in another Round of 16 match on Wednesday, February 4, 2026. Xinyu Wang defeated Rebeka Masarova 6-6, 4-2, while Oleksandra Oliynykova overcame Anna Bondar 6-6, 4-4. Anastasia Potapova also secured a win against Anastasia Zakharova, 1-6, 6-6, 4-3. Yue Yuan defeated Sara Sorribes Tormo 4-6, 7-6, 2-6, and Daria Snigur bested Jaqueline Cristian. Further quarterfinal matchups are yet to be determined.
