Maja Stark captured her first major championship at the US women’s Open, finishing with a two-shot lead at Erin Hills in Wisconsin. The victory makes her the third Swede to win the title and the first since annika Sorenstam’s win in 2006. Stark’s final round of 72 secured the win at seven-under par, holding off challenges from world number one Nelly Korda and Japan’s Rio Taneka.
Stark, 25, began the final round with a narrow lead, which she quickly extended with a birdie on the sixth hole. Korda, starting three shots back, closed the gap to one after a strong front nine. However, Stark regained control with birdies on the 11th and 14th, pushing her lead to nine under. Korda faltered on the back nine, ultimately finishing with a bogey.
Despite bogeys on the final two holes, Stark maintained her lead to secure the US Women’s Open title.Korda, still seeking her first win since November, finished with a 71.
“This just feels huge,” stark said. “You always know that it’s possible, but there are so many good golfers on this tour. I [didn’t] think I would be able to do it this week.”
Korda acknowledged the difficulty of the championship.”It’s still very elaborate,” she said. “It’s just an absolute heartbreaker… It hurts a little, but I’m happy with the progress and hopefully I can continue like this.”
England’s Charley Hull finished in a tie for 12th at one-under after a final round of 71.Fellow Englishwoman Lottie Woad earned the prize for low amateur.
