A series of seismic events in northwestern Nevada throughout April 2026 has renewed public focus on the state’s earthquake preparedness and its history of significant geological activity.

The activity began on April 13, 2026, when a magnitude 5.68 earthquake struck a rural area of northwestern Nevada at 6:29 p.m. The quake occurred approximately 60 miles east of Reno, near the Lahontan State Recreational Area. While initially reported by the U.S. Geological Survey as a magnitude 5.7, the Nevada Seismological Laboratory at the University of Nevada, Reno, later measured the event at 5.68.

Following the April 13 event, the University of Nevada, Reno Seismological Laboratory warned that aftershocks could continue for several months. This warning preceded further activity on April 22, 2026, when two additional quakes rattled the region. One event, measuring 4.7 magnitude, occurred near the Lahontan State Recreational Area, while a second, measuring 4.0 magnitude, struck approximately 135 miles southeast near Tonopah.

Historical Context and Seismic Risks

While the April 2026 events have caused concern, they remain below the magnitude of the most significant earthquakes in Nevada’s recorded history. According to reporting by the Reno Gazette Journal, Nevada has not seen an earthquake greater than 6.0 magnitude in more than six decades.

Historical data indicates that Nevada is among the most seismically active states in the U.S. One of the most significant events in the state’s history occurred in the Excelsior Mountains on January 30, 1934, which reached a magnitude of 6.3.

The current cluster of activity in northwestern Nevada, including the 5.68 magnitude quake near Fallon, serves as a reminder of the region’s volatility. Minor damage was reported in Fallon following the series of April tremors, though critical infrastructure, such as the Lahontan Dam, was reported as undamaged following the initial April 13 shock.

Preparing for Future Events

Emergency management officials and seismologists emphasize the importance of readiness in a state where surface faulting is common. Residents are encouraged to secure heavy furniture, prepare emergency kits with water and non-perishable food, and establish family communication plans.

During an earthquake, safety experts recommend the drop, cover, and hold on maneuver: dropping to the ground, taking cover under a sturdy piece of furniture, and holding on until the shaking stops.
