Understanding Polio and the Importance of Vaccination
Polio, or poliomyelitis, is a highly infectious viral disease that primarily affects young children. The virus invades the nervous system and can cause paralysis, which is often permanent. While there is no cure for polio, it is preventable through vaccination.
The Global Polio Eradication Initiative (GPEI) has been working for over three decades to eradicate polio worldwide. Significant progress has been made, with the number of cases decreasing by over 99% since . However, the virus continues to circulate in parts of Afghanistan and Pakistan, and outbreaks can occur in other countries, as evidenced by the recent case in Malawi.
The Novel Oral Polio Vaccine Type 2 (nOPV2)
The nOPV2 vaccine used in the Malawi campaign is a newer version of the oral polio vaccine. Traditional oral polio vaccines (OPV) contain a weakened form of the poliovirus. While highly effective, in rare cases, the weakened virus can mutate and regain its ability to cause paralysis, leading to vaccine-derived poliovirus (VDPV) outbreaks.
nOPV2 is designed to be genetically more stable, reducing the risk of VDPV. According to the GPEI’s recommendations, nOPV2 is the preferred vaccine for supplementary immunization activities in response to any detection of poliovirus.
Malawi’s Rapid Response
Malawi’s swift response to the detected case demonstrates the country’s commitment to protecting its population from polio. The country received 1.7 million doses of the nOPV2 vaccine from the International Coordinating Group on Vaccine Provision on , and the vaccines were distributed to points of delivery across the targeted districts within 12 hours, allowing the campaign to begin immediately.
Blantyre District achieved the highest coverage during the initial campaign, administering doses to 109% of the targeted population. This high coverage rate is a testament to the effective mobilization of communities and the dedication of health workers.
Community Engagement and Addressing Vaccine Hesitancy
The success of the vaccination campaign was also attributed to strong community engagement. Social mobilizers, health workers, religious leaders, and traditional authorities played a crucial role in providing accurate information about the vaccine, addressing misinformation, and reassuring community members.
Initially, 84 households were reluctant to vaccinate their children. However, through targeted engagement efforts, 45 of those households ultimately agreed to have their children vaccinated, highlighting the importance of building trust and addressing concerns within the community.
