Malaysia Recovers High-Value Picasso and 1MDB-Linked Artworks

Malaysia’s anti-graft agency successfully repatriated four high-value pieces of artwork on April 14, 2026. These works were recovered as part of an ongoing investigation into the multibillion-dollar scandal involving the state fund 1Malaysia Development Berhad (1MDB).

The recovered collection includes a 1961 print by Pablo Picasso, among other works by renowned artists. The Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) stated that the total value of these four specific pieces is approximately US$198,000.

The Recovered Artworks

The repatriated collection consists of works from several prominent artists of the 20th century:

• Pablo Picasso: L’Ecuyère et les clowns (1961)
• Joan Miró: Composition (1953)
• Maurice Utrillo: Maison de Rendez-vous de chasse de Henri IV, Rue St Vincent, Montmartre (1934)
• Balthus: Étude pour femme couchée (1948)

Recovery and Storage

The four pieces were part of a larger group of 12 artworks recovered from a former lawyer for 1MDB. The MACC noted that the Picasso and Miró pieces had been stored at the Christie’s and Sotheby’s auction houses prior to their return.

This repatriation follows discussions between the MACC and officials from the United States Justice Department and the Federal Bureau of Investigation. The MACC had indicated in December that it intended to repatriate a dozen pieces of art held in the United States.

Preservation and Valuation Process

Upon arrival, the MACC placed the artworks in a specially designated location under strict security control. The pieces are currently undergoing an environmental stabilization process to ensure they are optimally preserved.

Once the stabilization process is complete, the artworks will be uncrated. At that stage, the National Visual Arts Development Board will perform the necessary authentication and valuation of the works.

Context of the 1MDB Scandal

The recovery of these artworks is part of a broader, decade-long effort by Malaysia to retrieve more than US$4.5 billion. These funds were siphoned from 1MDB between 2009 and 2014 through a complex, globe-spanning scheme.

United States investigators have alleged that high-level 1MDB officials and their associates misappropriated the funds. According to these investigators, the stolen money was used to acquire various luxury assets, including jewelry, luxury hotels, and high-value artwork.
