The Malaysian Ministry of Foreign Affairs, also known as Wisma Putra, has confirmed that one of seven Malaysian-owned commercial vessels previously stranded in the Strait of Hormuz has been granted safe passage. The vessel is currently proceeding to its final destination following a period of being stranded due to the evolving regional situation.

The development was officially confirmed by the ministry on April 7, 2026. The vessel in question, identified in some reports as a PETRONAS tanker, is heading toward a refinery in Malaysia after receiving the necessary clearance to transit the strategic waterway.

Diplomatic Engagements

Wisma Putra stated that the successful outcome resulted from high-level diplomatic engagements between Malaysia and Iran. These efforts included a series of constructive communications between senior leadership from both nations.

On March 26, Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim held a telephone conversation with Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian. Foreign Minister Datuk Seri Mohamad Hasan engaged in talks with his Iranian counterpart, Abbas Araghchi, on March 24.

The Iran Embassy in Malaysia acknowledged the event on the X platform, stating that the first Malaysian ship had passed through the Strait of Hormuz. The embassy added, We had said that the Islamic Republic of Iran does not forget its friends.

Maritime Security and International Law

In its official statement, the Malaysian ministry emphasized its adherence to global maritime standards and the legal frameworks governing international waters.

Malaysia remains firmly committed to the principle of freedom of navigation, safety and security of maritime passage, in accordance with international law.

The ministry further reiterated that continued dialogue and diplomatic engagement are essential for addressing regional challenges and maintaining stability and peace in the area.

Current Status of Vessels

While one vessel has successfully cleared the Strait of Hormuz, the total number of Malaysian-owned commercial vessels that had been affected by the regional tensions was seven. The current status of the remaining six vessels was not detailed in the ministry’s confirmation on April 7.

The Strait of Hormuz is a critical chokepoint for global energy shipments, and the stranding of these commercial vessels occurred amid escalating regional tensions. The secure passage of the first vessel marks the beginning of the resolution for the Malaysian fleet in the region.
