The highly anticipated Malcolm in the Middle reboot is moving forward, but one familiar face will be missing.Erik Per Sullivan, known for his portrayal of Dewey, will not be returning. Caleb ellsworth-Clark is set to assume the role for the revival on Disney+.
Bryan Cranston, who played the show’s patriarch, revealed Sullivan’s decision during an interview on the “Fly on the Wall” podcast with Dana Carvey adn David Spade. Cranston said he approached Sullivan about the reboot, but Sullivan declined.
“I talked to Erik and I said, ‘Hey, we got the show! It’s going to come back,'” Cranston said. “He goes,’Oh,that’s fantastic!’ And I go,’Yeah,so we’re looking forward to having you back.’ He goes,’Oh,no,no,I don’t want to do it.But it’s fantastic.'”
Sullivan, now 33, has shifted his focus away from acting. Cranston noted that Sullivan is currently pursuing a master’s degree at Harvard University. Sullivan reportedly told Cranston he has not acted as he was about 9 years old and is not interested in returning to the profession.
The original series aired from 2002 to 2006. Sullivan stepped away from acting in 2010 at age 19. Returning cast members include Frankie Muniz, Jane Kaczmarek, Justin Berfield, and Christopher Masterson.
