The revival of the sitcom Malcolm in the Middle, titled Malcolm in the Middle: Life’s Still Unfair, premiered on April 10, 2026, on Hulu. The miniseries returns to the dysfunctional family dynamics of the original 2000-2006 series, focusing on the enduring marriage of Hal and Lois twenty years after the original show’s finale.

In a discussion regarding the revival reported by Deadline, Bryan Cranston and Jane Kaczmarek addressed the secret behind the longevity of their characters’ relationship. Despite the chaos of raising five sons, the actors attributed the staying power of Hal and Lois to the fact that they have good sex.

Return to the Family Chaos

The four-episode miniseries centers on an adult Malcolm, played by Frankie Muniz, who has spent years attempting to maintain a curated life separate from his family. According to reporting from USA Today, Malcolm describes his life as fantastic primarily because he has remained completely away from his parents and siblings.

This separation ends when Malcolm returns home to celebrate the 40th wedding anniversary of Hal and Lois. The visit serves as the catalyst for the plot, as Malcolm’s girlfriend, Tristan, played by Kiana Madeira, and his daughter, Leah, played by Keeley Karsten, are exposed to the family’s dysfunction for the first time.

The narrative explores the collision between Malcolm’s adult stability and the volatile environment of his childhood home. The event marks the first time his immediate family is integrated into his private life, leading to the implosion of the carefully constructed distance he had maintained.

Production and Development

Created by Linwood Boomer, the project was first announced in December 2024 as a revival in development for Disney+. While it was initially pitched as a two-hour movie, the project was eventually consolidated into four 30-minute episodes for Hulu.

Filming for the miniseries took place between April and May 2025 in Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada. Ken Kwapis, who directed episodes of the original series, returned to direct every episode of the revival.

The production was handled by Satin City Productions, Regency Television, and 20th Television. Executive producers for the series include Linwood Boomer, Bryan Cranston, Tracy Katsky, Gail Berman, Arnon Milchan, Yariv Milchan, Natalie Lehmann, and Ken Kwapis.

Cast and Returning Roles

The revival sees the return of several primary cast members from the original Fox series. Bryan Cranston reprises his role as the bumbling but loving patriarch Hal, and Jane Kaczmarek returns as the formidable Lois.

In addition to the parents and Malcolm, the series features the return of several other family members and original actors, including:

  • Christopher Masterson
  • Justin Berfield
  • Emy Coligado

While nearly the entire original cast returns, USA Today noted that We find two changes to the family’s cast via recasting. The series also introduces new starring roles filled by Caleb Ellsworth-Clark, Anthony Timpano, Vaughan Murrae, and Keeley Karsten.

The revival is available for streaming as of April 10, 2026, on Hulu and Hulu on Disney+.
