Mallya on Kohli & RCB: Instincts & Cricket
Vijay Mallya Addresses Kingfisher Collapse,RCB,and Potential Return to India
In a recent podcast appearance, fugitive businessman Vijay Mallya, once known as the “King of Good Times,” attempted to reshape the narrative surrounding his case. He addressed the collapse of Kingfisher Airlines, his investment in the Indian Premier League (IPL) team Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB), and the possibility of returning to India.
Mallya claimed he was subjected to a “vicious, relentless trial by media,” wich, combined with political motivations, contributed to his downfall. He argued that public perception, rather than concrete evidence, has painted him as a fraudster.
Reflecting on his foray into the IPL,Mallya recalled narrowly missing out on acquiring the Mumbai Indians before securing the Royal Challengers Bangalore franchise in 2008 for $112 million. He envisioned RCB as more than just a cricket team, aiming to create a lifestyle brand tailored to Bengaluru’s cosmopolitan atmosphere. He strategically linked the team’s identity to his liquor brands, Royal Challenge and Kingfisher.
Mallya also highlighted his early recognition of Virat Kohli’s talent, selecting him for RCB based on his performance in the Under-19 World Cup. Kohli remained with RCB for 18 seasons and recently led the team to its first IPL trophy.
Regarding his return to India, Mallya stated he would consider it if guaranteed a fair trial and a dignified existence. He cited concerns about prison conditions in India, referencing observations made by UK courts during his extradition proceedings. Mallya maintains he did not flee India but left for a pre-scheduled meeting before his passport was revoked.
“If I’m assured of a fair trial and a dignified existence, I’ll seriously think about returning,” Mallya said.

Legal proceedings against Mallya continue in both India and the UK. While British courts have approved his extradition, it remains delayed due to ongoing confidential matters between the two governments. The public and legal system remain skeptical of Mallya’s claims, awaiting accountability for his actions.
