Mamma Mia! Tour: Celebrating 25 Years of ABBA’s Timeless Musical in Grand Rapids
Mamma Mia! 25th Anniversary Tour Review
Mamma Mia!, the ABBA jukebox musical, celebrated its 25th anniversary in Grand Rapids, drawing in a lively crowd of fans. The audience, mainly white women and children in 70s disco attire, danced and sang during the high-energy encore featuring hits like “Dancing Queen” and “Mamma Mia!”.
The show tells the story of Sophie, a 20-year-old girl preparing for her wedding on a Greek Island while seeking to discover her father’s identity. She invites three possible fathers to the wedding without her mother, Donna, knowing. This setup leads to fun and nostalgic interactions.
The characters and their relationships progress through approximately 25 ABBA songs. However, the performance fell short in some areas. Many lead actors struggled to match the music’s intensity, diluting the emotional impact of their performances. The sound was loud, often overshadowing the vocals, making ensemble pieces overwhelming.
Understudies Stephanie Genito (Donna) and Blake Price (Sam) delivered decent performances, but their youth impacted the chemistry needed for their roles. Their key moments, particularly in the duet “S.O.S.” and “Winner Takes It All,” lacked the expected emotional depth. Amy Weaver stood out as Sophie, capturing a youthful charm, but the mother-daughter storyline didn’t connect powerfully.
Despite some weaknesses, several standout performances shone through. Christine Sherrill brought humor as Rosie with perfect timing and strong vocals. Her duet with Jim Newman (Bill) in “Take a Chance on Me” was particularly enjoyable. Grant Reynolds presented a memorable Sky, while Jalynn Steele impressed as Tanya, especially in “Does Your Mother Know.”
The ensemble’s dance numbers impressed, showcasing fun choreography that engaged the audience. The visual design, featuring a simple yet effective set and vibrant lighting, added to the show’s appeal.
Overall, the Grand Rapids opening night of Mamma Mia! was a joyous spectacle filled with energy and catchy ABBA songs. Despite some performance issues, fans relished the experience, ensuring the music would linger in their minds long after the curtain fell.
Mamma Mia! runs at Broadway Grand Rapids on November 26-27. For more details, visit this link.
