Emilia-Romagna Leads in breast Cancer Screening with High Survival Rates
Emilia-Romagna continues its national leadership in cancer prevention, marking 30 years since the Romagna region joined the regional mammography screening programme (1996-1998). The province of Rimini alone performs over 10,000 mammograms annually, with a recall rate for further diagnostic testing between 5% and 7%, consistent with regional standards.
First-level screening centers are located in Rimini, Santarcangelo, Cattolica, and novafeltria. Second-level diagnostic assessments are centralized at the Infermi Hospital.
The romagna Breast unit – one of the moast well-established in Northern Italy – performs over 600 surgeries annually throughout Romagna, approximately 25% of which take place in hospitals in Rimini. Five-year survival rates for breast cancer exceed 90%, demonstrating the effectiveness of early diagnosis and multidisciplinary care pathways.
“Data from the regional Oncology Network and AUSL Romagna show a territory that continues to record high participation rates in screening programs,” stated Emma Petitti, Vice-Secretary of the Democratic Party of Emilia-Romagna and regional councilor.
