On August 13, 2026, a 40-year-old resident of Casalgrande was arrested following a violent disruption at the emergency room of Sassuolo Hospital, according to local reporting by Gazzetta di Modena. The man caused damage to medical equipment in the radiology room and assaulted responding law enforcement officers and security personnel after medical staff informed him that his requested care was deemed medically unnecessary.
Incident Details at the Sassuolo Hospital Emergency Room
The disturbance began when the 40-year-old man became agitated after hospital personnel denied his request for medical treatment, determining that the care was unneeded, as reported by Gazzetta di Modena. The individual forced his way into the facility’s radiology room, where he grabbed a metal arm from a medical device and hurled it at people present in the room. He then picked up a steel IV pole, attempting to strike both responding carabinieri and a private security guard who was assisting medical operations. During the altercation, the man also damaged heart rate monitoring equipment inside the department.
According to Gazzetta di Modena, members of the Operational and Radiomobile Unit of the Sassuolo Company intervened alongside the private security guard to subdue the individual. Even after being restrained, the man continued resisting by punching and kicking operators, biting one carabiniere on the chest and hand, and later biting a second carabiniere in the knee area as he was being loaded into a military vehicle. The first military officer sustained non-serious injuries, while the auxiliary security guard also suffered minor injuries during the struggle.
Legal Status and Medical Intervention
Medical personnel ultimately brought the situation under control by administering a sedative pharmaceutical therapy to the patient. On Wednesday, a judge validated the arrest but refrained from applying precautionary custody measures due to the man’s current health status. Gazzetta di Modena noted that the suspect remains hospitalized in a medical facility under pharmacological sedation to manage a persistent state of severe psychophysical agitation.
The suspect is currently facing serious preliminary charges that include aggravated resistance and violence against a public official, injuries sustained by a private security guard, and the destruction of medical instrumentation within the emergency ward.
