A man has been arrested in Northern Ireland after brandishing a sword and firing a crossbow at police officers during a four-hour standoff in County Down, authorities confirmed.

The incident occurred in the town of Kilkeel on April 19, 2026, when Police Service of Northern Ireland (PSNI) officers responded to reports of a man acting erratically in a residential area. Upon arrival, officers encountered the suspect, who was wearing a mask and wielding a sword before discharging a crossbow in their direction.

According to the PSNI, the armed standoff began shortly after 3:00 p.m. Local time and lasted until approximately 7:00 p.m., during which time officers maintained a safe distance while attempting to de-escalate the situation. The man fired multiple bolts from the crossbow toward police positions, though no officers were struck.

Specialist firearms units were deployed to the scene, and negotiators engaged with the suspect throughout the ordeal. After several hours, tactical officers moved in and detained the man without further use of force. He was taken into custody on suspicion of attempted murder and possession of an offensive weapon.

No injuries were reported among police officers or members of the public during the incident. The PSNI confirmed that the crossbow and sword were recovered as evidence and are being examined by forensic teams.

Assistant Chief Constable Jon Boutcher of the PSNI addressed the incident in a brief statement, saying, “The actions of this individual posed a serious threat to the safety of our officers and the local community. The professionalism and restraint shown by our personnel throughout this prolonged standoff prevented what could have been a tragic outcome.”

The suspect, whose identity has not been formally released pending charges, is being held at a police station in Newry for questioning. A file is expected to be submitted to the Public Prosecution Service for Northern Ireland in the coming days.

Local representatives expressed concern over the event. Alan Chambers, a Democratic Unionist Party (DUP) councillor for the Kilkeel area, described the incident as “deeply unsettling” and praised the emergency response. “Thankfully, due to the swift and coordinated actions of the PSNI, this situation was resolved without loss of life,” he said.

Crossbow-related incidents are rare in Northern Ireland, though police have noted a small increase in the possession of such weapons in recent years, often linked to recreational use or online purchases. Under UK law, crossbows are not classified as firearms but are regulated under the Crossbows Act 1987, which prohibits their sale to anyone under 18 and restricts their use in public places.

The PSNI has urged anyone with video footage or additional information about the events in Kilkeel on April 19 to come forward. Investigations remain ongoing, and no further details have been released regarding the suspect’s motive or mental state at the time of the incident.
