Police have arrested a man in his 20s for stealing valuables, including a client’s mother’s belongings, after being hired as a one-day domestic helper through the neighborhood trading platform Karrot. The suspect used the app to secure the job before allegedly stealing items from the residence, according to a report by SBS News on August 6, 2026.

Theft Occurred During Karrot Domestic Service Appointment

The suspect, a man in his 20s, was apprehended by police after he allegedly stole money and valuables from the home of a person who hired him for a single day of housework. The connection between the employer and the employee was established via Karrot, a popular South Korean community-based marketplace and service app. According to SBS News, the stolen items included cherished belongings belonging to the client’s deceased mother.

The victim reported the theft after discovering that specific items were missing following the completion of the domestic work. Police tracked the suspect through the records and communication logs available on the Karrot platform, leading to his eventual arrest.

Risks of Unverified Service Hiring on Community Platforms

While Karrot is widely used for selling used goods and finding local services, this incident highlights the security risks associated with inviting unverified strangers into a private residence. The suspect leveraged the trust inherent in the community-based nature of the platform to gain access to the home.

Unlike professional domestic staffing agencies, which typically perform background checks and identity verification on their employees, peer-to-peer platforms like Karrot rely heavily on user reviews and mutual trust. In this case, the suspect was able to present himself as a reliable service provider to secure the one-day contract.

Police are currently investigating whether the suspect has a history of similar crimes or if he targeted the victim specifically through the app’s local listings. The investigation continues to determine the full extent of the stolen property and whether any other users of the platform were targeted by the same individual.
