Man Arrested Over Snapchat Grooming Allegations

The recurring use of social media and gaming platforms for the grooming and exploitation of minors continues to highlight critical safety vulnerabilities within digital communication ecosystems. Recent legal actions across multiple jurisdictions demonstrate how platforms like Snapchat, Roblox, and Fortnite are being leveraged by predators to establish contact with children, often bypassing parental oversight through ephemeral messaging and in-game interactions.

In the United Kingdom, a case reported by Birmingham Live detailed an incident in Staffordshire where a father used Snapchat to groom an underage girl. The exploitation was discovered after the girl’s mother viewed the messages, leading to the deletion of the perpetrator’s account by Snapchat.

This pattern of utilizing the platform’s specific features to target minors is mirrored in several United States cases. In Florida, 29-year-old Justin Adkins was arrested and extradited from Rhode Island on charges of sexual exploitation of a minor and coercing the production of child sexual abuse material. According to Florida Attorney General James Uthmeier, Adkins first contacted a victim in 2024 via the online game Fortnite before moving the communication to Snapchat.

Authorities stated that Adkins convinced the victim they were in a romantic relationship and coerced them into producing hundreds of pornographic images and videos. Attorney General Uthmeier emphasized the disturbing reality of child predators using platforms like Snapchat and Roblox for grooming.

Systemic Platform Exploitation

The transition from gaming platforms to private messaging apps is a common tactic in these cases. The use of Fortnite and Roblox as initial contact points allows predators to find victims in environments where children often feel safe and social. Once a connection is established, the move to Snapchat often provides a layer of perceived privacy due to the app’s disappearing message functionality.

Other reported instances of Snapchat exploitation include a case in Virginia where a man pleaded guilty to sexually exploiting more than 40 minor girls on the platform. In Douglas County, Georgia, 23-year-old Brandon Stephen Donehoo was arrested on October 7 during Operation Watchful Eye X. Donehoo, a registered sex offender, was charged with eight counts of sexual exploitation of children, seven counts of child molestation, and one count of grooming after using Snapchat to communicate with a female minor starting on September 22.

In another case, 39-year-old Ian Della-Rocca of Chessington was jailed after grooming children over Snapchat and paying them for indecent images.

Law Enforcement and Platform Response

Law enforcement agencies are increasingly utilizing targeted initiatives to combat these trends. The Douglas County Sheriff’s Office used a statewide initiative to verify compliance among registered sex offenders to identify Donehoo’s activities. In the Florida case, the arrest involved coordination between the Green Cove Springs Police Department, the Florida Department of Law Enforcement (FDLE), and the Office of Statewide Prosecution.

The role of the platforms themselves remains a focal point for safety discussions. While Snapchat deleted the account of the individual in the Staffordshire case following the discovery of the messages, the ability of predators to establish these connections underscores the ongoing challenge for platforms to prevent grooming while maintaining user privacy.
