A 49-year-old man has been charged in connection with the theft of nearly €6,000 worth of retail goods from three pharmacies in Cork.

The charges follow a series of shoplifting incidents targeting high-value health and beauty products. According to reports from the Irish Examiner, the stolen items included cosmetics, vitamins and hair-loss products.

The incidents highlight a pattern of targeted retail theft within the pharmaceutical sector in the region, where specific high-margin categories such as specialized skincare and supplements are frequently targeted for their resale value.

Retail Theft Trends in Cork

The pharmacy thefts are part of a broader trend of retail crime across Cork, involving both high-value targeted goods and essential commodities. Recent court proceedings in the region have detailed various shoplifting sprees targeting different retail sectors.

In one instance, two Czech nationals, Frantisek Cureja, 27, and Patrick Mate, 29, were charged with multiple theft offences occurring between December 1 and December 31, 2025. Their activities spanned several locations, including Lidl supermarkets in Mallow, Fermoy, and Kanturk, as well as a Tesco supermarket and a Dairygold store in Mallow.

The items stolen in that specific spree included alcohol, power tools, electrical devices, and bedding. On January 6, 2026, both men were further charged with handling stolen property at a rented house in Ballycoskery, Ballyhea, Charleville, Co Cork.

Another case involving a 25-year-old man, Jimmy Leahy, focused on the theft of meat products and electronics between September 2024 and May 2025. His thefts occurred across various city centre outlets, including:

  • Tesco Express on South Main St, where meat and alcohol valued at over €100 were taken.
  • Tesco on Paul St, where the stolen goods included eight steaks, an electric shaver, two hair straighteners, washing pods, two bottles of wine, and an electric grill, totaling €352.
  • Centra on Shandon St, where two bottles of wine and two legs of lamb valued at €49 were taken.
  • Lidl in Cornmarket St, where three bottles of vodka valued at €75 were stolen.
  • Marks and Spencer, where three trays of fresh meat valued at €68 were taken.

Leahy also committed shoplifting offences at Aldi in Bishopstown, TK Maxx, and Elvery’s Sports.

Legal and Operational Impacts

The financial impact of these thefts is felt not only in the direct loss of inventory but also in the operational costs of implementing increased security and surveillance. In the case of the two men charged in January 2026, Gardaí reported that CCTV footage showed the suspects using shopping trolleys to collect a diverse range of items and exiting the premises without attempting to pay.

Legal and Operational Impacts

Det Garda Gary Costello of Charleville Garda station noted that the suspects used a car fitted with false plates to transport the stolen goods, indicating a level of planning intended to evade detection.

The judicial response to these crimes varies based on the scale of the theft and the criminal history of the defendants. For example, Jimmy Leahy received a three-month prison sentence from Judge William Aylmer, with two months suspended and one month backdated to account for time already served.

In other cases, the scale of recidivism has led to more significant penalties. A Cork woman with 173 theft convictions was given a six-month jail term by Judge Mary Dorgan in June 2024.
