A 20-year-old man from Texas faces charges of attempted murder and arson after allegedly throwing a Molotov cocktail at the San Francisco residence of OpenAI CEO Sam Altman on April 10, 2026.
Authorities identified the suspect as Daniel Moreno-Gama of Spring, Texas. According to a federal criminal complaint and statements from officials, Moreno-Gama traveled from Texas to San Francisco with the intention of killing Altman.
The incident occurred at approximately 3:30 a.m. Or 4:00 a.m. On April 10, 2026, when Moreno-Gama allegedly hurled an incendiary device at an exterior gate of Altman’s home, setting it on fire before fleeing the scene on foot.
Less than one hour after the attack at the residence, Moreno-Gama allegedly traveled to the headquarters of OpenAI, located approximately 3 miles away, where he threatened to burn down the building.
Legal Charges and Federal Investigation
On April 13, 2026, San Francisco District Attorney Brooke Jenkins announced that Moreno-Gama faces state charges including attempted arson and two counts of attempted murder. Jenkins alleged that the suspect attempted to kill both Altman and a security guard stationed at the residence.
We interpret this behaviour for just what It’s: An attempt on Mr Altman’s life and an extreme danger to those around him and those who work for his company,
Brooke Jenkins, San Francisco District Attorney
In addition to state charges, Moreno-Gama faces federal charges for the possession of an unregistered firearm and the attempted damage and destruction of property by means of explosives. Al Jazeera reports that he faces two counts of attempted murder and nine other charges in total, with the possibility of life in prison.
The FBI conducted a raid on Moreno-Gama’s home in Spring, Texas, on April 13, 2026. During a news conference held that same day in San Francisco, FBI San Francisco Acting Special Agent in Charge Matt Cobo stated that the attack was not spontaneous
and was instead planned, targeted and extremely serious.
Motive and Targeted AI Leadership
Court documents and federal complaints indicate that Moreno-Gama is strongly opposed to the development of artificial intelligence. He reportedly wrote extensively about the purported risk to humanity
and the prospect of our impending extinction
caused by AI.
Authorities also revealed that Moreno-Gama possessed a list of other artificial intelligence executives, suggesting that Altman may not have been the only intended target of his actions.
Despite the use of a homemade bomb and the threats made at the corporate offices, authorities confirmed that no one was injured at either the residence or the OpenAI headquarters.
Moreno-Gama is scheduled to appear in court on April 14, 2026. State court records as of April 13 did not indicate whether the suspect has secured legal representation.
