Indian Man Awakens Before Cremation, Doctors Suspended

A man named Rohitash Kumar, 25, startled a community in Rajasthan, India when he woke up moments before his cremation. Three doctors were suspended due to negligence.

The incident occurred on November 21, 2024. Kumar, who had difficulties speaking and hearing, fell ill and was taken to Bhagwan Das Khetan Hospital in Jhunjhunu. Upon arrival, doctors claimed he had died from an epileptic seizure.

Hours later, while his body was on a pile of wood ready for cremation as per Hindu customs, Kumar suddenly awoke.

Following this event, the three involved doctors were identified. They are Dr. Sandeep Pachar, the medical officer in charge; Dr. Yogesh Jumar Jakhar, and Dr. Navneet Meel, both medical examiners.

D. Singh, the head medical examiner for the district, stated that the doctors prepared a postmortem report without performing a physical examination. Ramavatar Meena, the district collector, echoed that the postmortem was merely written and not conducted.

The doctors did attempt resuscitation but declared Kumar dead when his heart showed no activity. Instead of completing an autopsy, they sent his body for cremation.

Singh reported that Kumar began to move just before his body was to be cremated. Kumar was then moved to the intensive care unit but showed no improvement. He was transferred to Sawai Man Singh Hospital in Jaipur, over 160 kilometers away, but died on the way and was officially declared dead upon arrival on November 22.

This incident led to serious concerns regarding medical practices in Jhunjhunu hospitals. Meena stated this negligence was severe, promising that action would be taken against those responsible. A special committee has been formed to investigate the incident thoroughly.
