In 2001, Meiwes, then 42, posted an advertisement on a German forum seeking someone willing to be eaten. Brandes, a 43-year-old engineer, responded.Meiwes invited Brandes to his home in Rotenburg, southern Germany. He gave Brandes sleeping pills and schnapps before dismembering him.
Meiwes then proceeded to cook and eat parts of Brandes’ body, storing the remaining flesh in his freezer. He consumed the remains over the next 10 months. The german cannibal told a documentary crew that he fried a piece of Brandes’ back, serving it with potatoes and sprouts.
Meiwes described the experience of eating Brandes’ flesh as achieving a “perfect inner connection.” he likened the taste to pork, but stronger. After the act, Meiwes dismembered Brandes and buried him in his garden, keeping portions in the freezer.
Arrested in december 2002, Meiwes initially told police the meat was wild pig. Investigations revealed the truth, leading to his conviction. Brandes reportedly had a fetish for castration and willingly participated in the act.
In January 2004, Meiwes was initially convicted of manslaughter and sentenced to eight years and six months. However, a retrial in May 2006 resulted in a murder conviction and a life sentence. He remains imprisoned at the age of 63.
“The first bite was, of course, very strange. It was a feeling I can’t really describe. I’d spent over 40 years longing for it, dreaming about it.”
